Freezes when launch from shortcut

When i launch from the shortcut on desktop it freezes and just started doing this 3 or 4 months ago but just left it alone but now want to play...when i launch from library on steam it ask me to sign in but it shouldn't ask me that at all cause this is going thru steam....can someone please help me with a new launch link or what to download to get this running thru steam properly..it was working fine earlier this year but now i can play it at all...
