Phantasmalist Class Great for Mages
I'm just here to offer a counter argument, saying that Phantasmalism is a decent class to spec into in final enderal version

I kept running into 2-year old "phantasmalism class sucks" posts, and though I had to invest significant points into the tree, I'm impressed with it's utility.

Especially rank 4 and 5 souls, (though all levels are decent at some point) take the cake.

I'm just hitting lvl 40 and have the "petrified one" and "navigator" souls and they both can solo most rooms of mobs.

-------
Definitely the petrified one is my pride and joy. I like a good mage(he isn't a good mage), but petrified is a freaking tank with 600 health and a full set of "the ash warrior" armour. He can solo a "Lord of the Dead" 9 times out of 10.

Give him a magic weapon and a low-tier healing spell and watch him become almost unbeatable.

Navigator isn't that much behind, just squishier as a mage and don't give him any stream spells like "bite" or "breath" so that he doesn't drain his mana. If you don't cheat, finding the right set of spells to min/max him can sure be frustrating, but I like Icespike 3, Summon soil 1, Heal 2, Ward, and lightning cloak.
-------

Overall, I'm just saying I appreciate the class. I'm playing highest difficulty lvl and no mods except for item tracking. As a mage, my trusty Petrified one keeps me alive and aggros mobs way better than any summon does.

I put in a lot of effort to figure out Phasmalism and apparitions. Eventually I realized they can be VERY powerful allies when you set them up properly:

I remember my Starling Navigator apparition soloing most high-lvl areas and barely taking a scratch process. Absorb Life & Essence Gift is really all you need to keep your apparition at top health (most of the time).

Even better spell combo, love it!

I also believe apparitions aren't affected as radically by the difficulty as the player. I could be wrong, but I swear I take much more damage with the same armour set and a higher armor lvl, than my apparition does.

For folks who don't like cheating but don't mind finding OP game mechanics, it seams that Phatasmalism becomes even MORE viable on Master and Iron Path Difficulty. :)

Correct, companions and summons don't take extra damage via increased difficulty. Same thing applies to base-Skyrim, Fallout 3 & Fallout: New Vegas (might be the case with other Havok -engine games too). Oddly enough, apparitions aren't affected by Magic Resistance cap either, so you can make them entirely impervious to mages.

I like to give my apparition a copy of Frostwind spell. Statistically it's not the strongest DPS, but the whirlwind projectile has a wide hitbox, it passes through enemies and if you hit a fleeing enemy with it, it can tick twice. Worse single-target DPS, but hitting multiple foes at the same time makes it good at clearing packs.

I'm level ten at the moment and Rugar One-eye is destroying everything.

I have fond memories of my first iron path playthru going dual wielding thaumaturgy and phasmalism!
Since then, i can't wrap my head around playing without phasmalism. Even just a splash is good.
I really like to tweak my apparitions with different gear for different situations even if it is not necessary, it's very fun to do.
