Oh god the cringe!
So I just found out that Calia is an anime trope. On top of that the voice actresses delivery combined with the way the dialog is written gives the impression that the character was created by an edgey middle schooler who wanted to put their self insert naruto OC into the game. She genuinely comes across like a bargain bin naruto.

Same with Jespar - an edgelord with a sharp tongue. As much as I like Enderal's story and it's lore - companions are a weak spot for me, and I tend to just skip their personal quests

Have you completed their character arcs and the main story of the game? Op hides their playtime so i could not tell. Exterminator has 28 hours so i assume they did not go far into the game.

Hides playtime? Is that on by default? how do I change that?

"inner demon" is a common plot, not tied to Naruto. And it's not similar, the companions have their backstory that you will get through, and you also have choices before/during/after them

I bet you enjoyed the intro then. "Bring me a nice crisp piece of meat" and the scene on the ship.

A person with cheek markings has an evil entity inside them that grants them immense power at the cost of their inhibitions. That person also has to deal with suspicion and resentment of the people of their home because of the entity inside them, while going to an academe for people to train magical abilities and apply them for use in a military organisation. So, Tell me who I'm talking about Naruto or Calia.

At least we can say it's certainly not the first time common tropes or characters are used in different stories. Sometimes it's done to appreciate or flatter the original work. Sometimes it's done because that's just the cool thing at the time. For instance, the Jesus mythology is common among a dozen different religions that predate Christianity. Is he a unique Savior or just a bargain bin Horus?

I'm not criticizing the devs just for using tropes, I'm criticizing them for using them poorly. The writing and voice acting are simply not strong enough to make a character like Calia work. Answer me this, if you removed the trope elements of Calia's character what is left? Nothing, she is only that trope and nothing else. Good characters have tropes, bad characters are tropes.

I can get behind that.

Jespar is at least slightly more complex. If only because his personality seems to be a bit of a facade over a more troubled person--closer to a realistic, multi-dimensional human. Instead of Calia's "you're just going to have to accept that I'm broken, crazy and possibly dangerous because it's too much work to get over myself" attitude. I ended up in a relationship with Calia for an achievement and completion more than real interest in her.

agree on those points, however that's not all that there is to it. Calia for example has its power from the black stone with which her father tried to revive her so if they have some similar points, they also have an equal number of differences.
