Gonna spoiler tag this, just to be on the safe side, so you can decide how much you want explaining..

First off, have you read the book that is just outside Old Sherath? It starts one of the Myths and Legends quests, specifically The Ash Widow.

In the book, you learn that a noblewoman and her servant, killed at the hand of her vile husband in an un-named castle, somehow created/became a terrible and vengeful being, the Ashen Widow. The castle in question is Goldenford.

The book also mentions that anyone foolish enough to bring the deformed claw of the husband to the ruins of the castle (it's not actually ruined, is it? I guess maybe the family of the lady you find inside rebuilt the place...) will be able to raise her.

The book appears to be a little old, because it claims that the claw's location can only be speculated upon, when in fact by the time of the game, it's on display in the Museum in the South Quarter of Ark.
