Actually soon as I got passed the statue I died over and over to a mud golem or something so I quit playing.
I'm thinking it's a generation thing. Us old-school gamers really like to examine every nook and cranny of games but younger people charge through haha. I saw that skeleton there and i know they often have stuff lying around them - spotted the key immediately.
Treat the game like Skyrim and Dark Souls had a child and you will have a better time. If you don't like games that have significant challenge and require some level patience and planning though then yeah it's probably not for you.
for mud golem you need to range kill it...there is small warf to side of him. if you can get him to head towards that warf and you at the end of warf in the water part go into sneak position and use ponioc(ms) spell on him until mp out then your arrows and if any hp still left go and hit him few and he dead by then. thats how i killed him. hope that help you some.
The very first time i played when the game came out I had the same problem. Had to look at a german walkthrough on youtube to find the damn key lol.
