It is just amazing this GAME (yes i call it a stand alone game) totally blows Skyrim out of the water in every way! The characters, the music, the locations, the entire skill system... everything!
At the beginning of the game you're essentially an ordinary person with no relevant training using salvaged/shoddy gear, and you need to gauge threats accordingly. (Real-world you probably wouldn't fare any better trying to take on three wolves using falling-apart museum pieces!)
This changes as your skills develop and you get access to better stuff, but that won't happen for a while, so exercise due caution and always consider (and use) your environment and possible escape routes if things go south.
If you are having a hard time I suggest going with a magic build primarily, spells in this game are very powerful.
After you up a few levels it gets a lot easier.
I basically used blazing spark through the entire game: it drains your mana real fast even at 100 elementalism, so if you miss once you are dead, but it deals huge damage. Big risk, big reward = fun imo.
If you do go down the elemtentalism route, then keep the difficulty on master/iron or it'll be far too easy.
I'm jealous that you get to experience this game afresh. Walk blessed.
Cheers!
I remember getting beaten up by a crab....
Also I am pretty sure they want you to play as a mage, they shove it down your throat all early game.
