my mistake then, sorry. nice bug to have, learn something new. as being able in enderal best ask devs if they brought that over or not.

It still works with Unnoficial patch in Skyrim. So I wonder if in Enderal they forgot about it.
Or that was on purpose (as now there is additional experience from trapping soul)
Either way, I never knew about it before now.
In Skyrim I junk-sold soul gems with mismatched charges, and in Enderal I've been avoiding using magically charged weapons at all.
I also haven't gotten to the point with Enchanting in Enderal where I'm even reaching for filled soul gems yet - so it's good to know I won't need waste any that have mismatched charges. ;)
according to the links you gave, it was an bug and on the pc verision unnoffical patch did some work on it. so it might be best to ask arthmoor about it or ask the guys the post called old farts coffee house on sse forum...they might know.
Partial gems should be possible to reset by the design.
its a bug. this was never possible in older tes games either. skyrim only bug. good its gone. doesnt work in requiem either.
Edit: Spent a few minutes and found this one that prevents you from filling large soul gems with undersized souls! Won't help me empty the one I have already filled but stops it in the future. No more having to micomanage inventory before casting soul trap!

But this would be an ugly solution as PlaceAtMe is considered a dirty script function because it produces savegame bloat if used too often.
After all, I haven't seen anyone yet who brought this behavior to Oblivion. XD
However, I've made a mod for Enderal, that let you continue filling soui gems until their maximum capacity is reached.
This mod works in a hierarchy starting to favor empty petty soul gems over all others, like this:
1.) Petty
2.) Lesser
2a.) Soul Gem of the Aura Thief (Unique)
3.) Common
4.) Greater
5.) Grand
5a.) Black Soul gems (they are favored over Sira's Soulbender as that one can hold any kind of soul.)
6.) Sira's Soulbender (Unique from my mod)
The soul levles are splitted into points
Petty soul: 1 Point
Lesser soul: 2 Points
Common soul: 3 Points
Greater soul: 4 Points
Grand soul: 5 Points
Some examples of the functionality:
You catch a Grand soul = 5 points.
You have 2 empty petty soul gems = 2 points
You have 1 lesser soul gem filled with a petty soul = 1 point
And you have an empty greater soul gem = 4 points, but only 2 will be used as the soul level is then 0.
Which means at the end, you have:
2x filled petty soul gems.
1x fully filled lesser soul gem
1x a greater soul gem filled with a lesser soul.
If we continue that example and catch another grand soul, the greater soul gem will be fully filled from lesser to greater which means 2 points.
Yet there are still 3 points left, which currently will give no penalty, but just an additional graphical effect to show that a part of the soul got wasted as no more free soul gems were available.
I thought it would be nice to have some ghosts and magical anormalities spawning in if souls get wasted in such a way.
Yet I currently don't plan to continue working on it anytime soon. Being happy with the current functionality. :)
The unique soul gems are either unique.
Aura Thief's lesser one can be recharged of about 5 times, before it breaks.
The Soulbender can be recharged about 50 times.
