Was it really just hitting them while they were "down"? If so then something is not right with my game.
Edit: I even tried using god mode and kill command and they won't ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ die.
Edit: Okay, just finished... I think... Fight is so damned buggy with dear red-eyes joining the fight when one of them goes down and then they both go attack the prone body of Dijaam?... Whatever, so if anyone's wondering: why aren't these things dying: you need to get both of them down and then attack one of them A ♥♥♥♥ TON to effectively kill one of them.
In console use these commands:
setessential 0013fa21 0
setessential 0013fa23 0
This should cause them to die the moment their health reaches 0.
Again, only use this if the regular way really doesn't want to work for some reason.
I wish I could have talked my way out of this fight. Playing a rethoric/alchemy heavy character, who is good at sneaking and one handed weapons, but nothing else is a terrible build for this boss fight.
The worst thing is just figuring out this shield mechanic while trying not to die immediately. I think with god mode enabled it took me atleast 5-10 minutes of fighting to take down their shields. The amount of potions I would have needed for a fight this long is hard to imagine.
Everything else before that boss fight was so easy, had no problems until then, so I did not expect such a difficult fight.
Love the mod, but this is one of those hopelessly contrived scenarios that were common in commercial games a few years ago.
We have a tableop gaming group made of writers and designers where this kind of thing is comically nicknamed “THE THREE MAGIC TESTICLES”.
If a scenario looks really fishy, a player will ask the Game Master, “This isn’t going the be he Three Magic Testicles, is it?”
If the group finds the Game Master guilty, he’s only allowed to continue playing if he wears his underwear on his head for the rest of the night.
The name comes from a parody we sent to one of our buddies who was notorious for this kind of thing.
Here it is, almost verbatim from the original from a few years ago:
The Three Magic Testicles:
Game Master: When you enter the room, the door closes a locks behind you... it’s a magical door.
Players: We didn’t say we went in. We just opened the door.
Game Master: Um... a wind blows you all in and the door locks behind you.
Players: A magical wind?
Game Master: ...... Yes.
Players: We cast an unlock spell on the door.
Game Master: It doesn’t work.
Players: Because it’s a magical door, right?
Game Master: Right! So you find yourself in a 5x5 room and you’re immediately attacked by a giant ogre wearing nothing but blue pants, and his ferocious companion weiner dog.
Players: Ok, we’ll bite. We all attack him with all our weapons and magical spells and s***.
Players: Let us guess. None of that does any damage.
Game Master: Right! He’s invulnerable.
Players: Perfect.
Players: How about this? Let’s agree that we died a dozen times and that all the magical armor and weapons and spells and s*** we’ve been traipsing around collecting for the last week suddenly don’t work and you tell us how we kill this a**-hole.
Game Master: But?.... The fun is trying random arbitrary things over and over until you find out!
Players: Your idea of fun and ours vary considerably. For instance, scouring our sacks with wire brushes is fun compared to this.
Game Master. Aww... ok.
Game Master: So, his blue pants are “magical-pants-of-your-s***-doesn’t work”. He only takes damage when his pants fall down.
Players: WTF? And how do we make that happen?
Game Master: You have to attack his ferocious companion weiner dog.
Players: Until he dies?
Game Master: No. He can’t die.
Players: Because he’s a magical weiner dog.
Game Master: Right! You attack him until he gets so angry he goes crazy and pulls the ogre’s pants down.
Players: That makes perfect sense, now that we know.
Game Master: I know! So, when the ogre’s pants fall down, you’ll see he has THREE TESTICLES!
Players: Magic testicles?
Game Master: EXACTLY!! One of them will light up, and you have to shoot that testicle. But you have to do it fast, because after three seconds the ogre pulls his pants up and you have to attack the weiner dog again so he pulls the pants down again.
Players: And eventually, we have to shoot the testicle until the ogre’s health goes to zero?
Game Master: YES.
Players: And then he dies?
Game Master: Noooooo. He gets up and his health goes back to 100%!
Players: FFS.
Players: Sooooo...we have to do all this three times?
Game Master: Right. Because he has THREE testicles... get it?
Game Master: .... and they’re magic testicles.
Players: So, you know we’re only letting you play the rest of the night if you agree to wear your underwear over your head, right?
Game Master: Dang. I’ll go do that now.
Players: Don’t forget to load the beer fridge on your way.
In my opinion, this is one of the few boss fights in the Skyrim engine that feels like a boss fight. It's honestly not all that difficult either provided that your character is adequately strong enough to complete the quest-line.
If I recall correctly, the quest-line is generally of the very hard variety, meaning you should be somewhere in the level 40+ range. And if one is purposefully playing on the "Iron Path" difficulty and can't complete this quest... then maybe they're not good enough as a player and/or character to complete this quest on "Iron Path" difficulty?
And that's more player error than anything else. With proper equipment you can:
* Down the melee Petrified easily
* Rush towards the magic Petrified and down them
* Destroy their shields and them in the process
* Then Mendelus joins the fight (2 v 1 fight again)
* You can take Mendelus out first if you'd like (Order is not important here)
* Then it's just a matter of easily downing the melee Petrified and destroying their shields
The melee Petrified has a two-handed weapon which means they're easier to dodge. Not to mention you as a player can easily use the spell Winterskin to make evasion easier. Yes, the fight is not super straight forward (Although not that complex either, to be fair), but that's what makes it interesting and not just another generic 2 v 1 fight with bandits.
