To explain why I suggest that; it's possible that whoever was in charge of the Steamworks settings for the game accidentally or inadvertently made the full game "DLC" require the free trial entitlement, since technically the full game unlock is now tracked as a DLC for the "base game" (free trial). Not sure how Steam usually handles that, since I'm not familiar with other games that have changed in this manner, (My suggestion is based on a hunch on how similar systems can fail when modified in unexpected ways.)
As a corollary to the above, it may be possible that keys generated before the switch to the current system are no longer valid, since they may refer to package IDs that no longer exist or can no longer be legitimately unlocked. The inner workings of Steam feel a bit arcane to me most of the time, and I would not be surprised if it were possible to accidentally invalidate old (unclaimed) keys by making big changes to a game. (Especially since there are specific ways to intentionally revoke access to certain types of keys, even after they have been claimed.)
Is that the REAL reason they did it? To mess with ppl buying from third party? Now it's starting to make sense because everyone damn well knows the "free trial" is not actually getting any new ppl.
Not sure if this is correct.
I bought my key on a reliable keyshop and my trial converted into the full game.
