I can't give you advice on how to become competitive, but that should give you a solid base to beat the AI.
AoE 3 has more moving parts, but they move more on their own.
Uh, I'd say the level of micro required in AoE 3 is fairly similar. Units may not miss but due to the snare, you especially want to micro your cav to avoid them getting snared.
