More Asian civs would be welcome too. Koreans come to mind.
We'll see what they've come up with, but right now, I'm just hyped that they've got a team still actively working on the game!
I would not mind middle eastern civs or more African civs either. New African civs could also use the African mechanics.
Of course, if recognisability by the market is anything to go by, Zulus, Brazil, Morocco, Persia, Poland-Lithuania, Denmark-Norway and Korea are probably the best candidates. They need to sell the game at the end of the day.
However other candidates that I can see get in, are Oman (Who actually did form a Naval Empire during the period and are really a good contender for a candidate for this), Mapuche (Another South American civ with quite the area and existed as an independent state until not long before WWI) and Maori. There are others but...
..If we include Oceanic civs... we also get new terrains and Natives to play with..
Since they'd want to go with something that sells, I imagine they would go with an area that would result in new maps, native allies and mercenaries.
Middle East seems to be the most untapped region in that regard. Persia has been highly requested so would be a perfect fit.
They could get away with maybe pairing them with Morocco or the Barbary states.
I honestly think the Barbary states would be able to offer very different gameplay than any other faction so far due to being a straight up pirate faction. They could maybe have similar level up mechanics as the African factions while Persia could be given the same as the Asian dynasties, advancing through wonders and able to build an embassy.
Persia could also come with an architecture that could be partially applied to the Ottomans.
