usually civs have a trade-off between good early game and much momentum, but no long-lasting eco and unit upgrades, or good eco + upgrades, but no early game momentum. very few civs are strong early on and scale well into the lategame.

i would recommend france, if you remember to build a trading post early on to boost your momentum, since they have incredible eco from early on, resilient settlers (so that raids arent as fatal as with other civs), a good variety of military units, and in lategame of course the infamous cuirassiers.

in team games generally, Mexico is very strong (their DLC is on sale as well atm), since they have incredible soldados (musketeers) and a card that gives all your team players an additional TC (for booming out vills) and many outpost wagons (for securing your base while booming or taking map control to secure natural resources). best team card in the entire game IMO.

and of course ottomans as a good beginner civ to get into the game, since your vills get produced automatically.
