Then I got aoe4 and man it's a dissapointment. This game feels like the franchise moving forward from aoe2, while 4 is more of an imitation of aoe2 with it's own fair share of problems.
Every time i start a game of aoe4 i think "I could be playing aoe3 or aoe2 instead"
AOM is better than AOE4.
And if AOM had better graphics I'd probably play it more than 3.
Either way 4 is kind of a joke. I couldn't do it for one hour let alone decades like AOE2/3/M
Just another fine example of why board members and upper mgmt have no business sticking their noses into the game world and need to take their asses back to sporting events or leave game devs the ♥♥♥♥ alone and let them be the ones making the decisions.
It's bound to happen, both 2 and 3 sold well otherwise they would not keep supporting them and releasing dlc.
A pity that AOE1 was treated as a testing ground more and has not received proper treatment with new civs and units.
And if I recall, AoM ranked higher in popularity than AOE3. It has a better grand campaign and existing outside of the empires series as a spinoff, it relieved some burdens of expectation and allowed people to be more open to where it deviated from the AOE2 formula.
AoM also has plenty of room for new civs and their mythology.
Romans, Aztecs, Celts, Persians and Japanese would all be fine options.
Heck, it has room for new minor or even major gods of existing factions too, at least I don't think anyone would mind if the Greeks got a fourth major god with some minor ones added too considering the Greeks are at the core of the game.
Demeter could become a new economy focused major goddess. Persephone as her daughter is a shoe in for a minor goddess who Hades could also get access to.
Hestia and Pan could be good as other minor deities.
Plenty of room for unique faction mechanics for earlier mentioned new factions too.
Romans could make use of generals or centurions who could inspire nearby troops, giving bonuses. Obtaining favour could be from building collums and statues, which could be cheaper and more numerous than the Egyptian monuments but weaker, in total the results would be the same so for them it would be more a gradual increase.
Aztecs could get favour from priests using temples, but could be able to sacrifice units for a quick favour boost.
They could also make use of different warrior castes with different purposes. One of them could be good against myth units similar as the hersir.
Only thing DE did was make some of the older players stop playing because how bad it is

Recent reviews are currently also better for AoE3DE (89% positive) compared to AoE4 (83%).
It seems more and more players are finding out which is the better game.
12.5 k as i was writing this
But personally i like AOE 3 better, just DE was a cash grab that killed the game.
More people find IV to be better than III
