Pretty much.
I don't see a point to buy AoE4 right now, since there is nothing looks new or special.
I was hoping more ages would be available, for example, like 7 ages in the Rise of Nations, but nah, it seems it is an AoE2 successor and nothing more.
The only thing you might want to buy AoE4 is, you don't need to worry about friendly fire.
AoE3 siege weapons also don't have friendly fire. I think, atleast.
I wanted to like AoE4, but it just looks so cheap.
4 has little civ difference.
4 has learned no advantage from 3
AoE2 has friendly fire, and AoE4 is just AoE2 successor with a fancy skin with everything re-coded in result, as far as what I heard in those gameplay video.
In compensation for this 4 has a higher price.
Outside of freshness- visual design of GUI, watercolor terrain textures, new sounds, civ mechanics...
Overall it's a pretty good RTS but not really coming close to expectations for 4th mainline Age of Empires game.
Plus it's missing a lot of features (some ought to come in the next few months)- skirmish customization options, player color selection, cheat codes, map editor, ability to fully rebind + bind all mouse buttons, rough camera (zoom is still meh), bad tech-tree design...
On top of overall mediocre visuals for a AAA-priced game. The engine is just not very good and nothing there is really impressive for a 2021. Everything from complexity of models to tech behinf water or weather. Just a bit dated, uninspired at best.
I guess all campaign content in IV might be longer in III, hard to say atm.
