Depth Chart Assignments (A Quick Guide)
Hey all,

The Depth Chart might be a bit confusing, I was wondering why I had a player with an Overall of B set as my 5th Offensive Lineman. So I decided to make a quick little guide for those who also might be wondering or a bit lost with Depth Chart Assignments.

My wording may get confusing as well, as I use on field position names when explaining where players lineup. But over all, if you follow the number listing, you'll be good.

The order will be as seen on the in game Depth Chart.

Quarterbacks

1st - Starter
2nd - Backup
3rd - Bench, Emergency Backup

Running Backs

1st - Starter or Primary Running Back
2nd - Fullback/Blocker, will carry the ball in Heavy Sets
3rd - Emergency Backup
4th - Deep Backup

Wide Receivers (Bit different than the rest as they can lineup left or right of the Offensive Line, depending on the Formation and Play called.)

1st - Primary Wide Receiver
2nd - Secondary Wide Receiver, may be slot receiver when using 2 WR, 1TE sets
3rd - Slot Receiver, Left Slot Receiver in 4WR Sets
4th - Right Slot Receiver in 4WR Sets, used as Inside Right Slot Receiver in 4 WR sets on Bunch Formations

Tightends (Much like Wide Receivers, as they can lineup on either side of the Offensive Line)

1st - Starter, will lineup as a Lineman, in a Slot Wide Receiver Position, or as an H-Back.
2nd - Backup, normally a blocker
3rd - Emergency Backup

Offensive Line

1st - Left Tackle, 1st from Left side of line
2nd - Left Guard, 2nd from left side of line
3rd - Center, 3rd from left side of line
4th - Right Guard, 4th from left side of line
5th - Right Tackle, 5th from left side of line

Defensive Line

1st - Right End, 1st from left side of line
2nd - Tackle, 2nd from left side of line
3rd - Tackle, 3rd from left side of line, becomes Nose Tackle on Heavy Sets
4th - Left End, 4th from left side of line, becomes a Tackle on Heavy Sets
5th - 4th Linebacker, 5th from left side of line on Heavy Sets Only

Linebackers

1st - Right Outside Linebacker, 1st from left side
2nd - Middle Linebacker, 2nd from left side, becomes Rightside Middle Linebacker in 4 LB sets.
3rd - Left Linebacker, 3rd from left side, becomes Leftside Middle Linebacker in 4 LB sets
4th - Left Linebacker/Left End, 4th from left side.

Note on Linebackers. Based on what I see with formations, the 2nd Linebacker in your Depth Chart is the most used. They stay in for Nickle Formations and are the only Linebacker in the Dime, plus it is the 2nd and 3rd Linebackers in the 6-2 Formation.

Defensive Backs

1st - Right Defensive Back
2nd - Free/Deep Safety
3rd - Strong Safety
4th - Left Defensive Back
5th - Right Slot/Up Safety
6th - Left Slot/Up Safety

Kicker and Punter

1st - Starter
2nd - You probably don't have one, if so, he is an emergency backup, cut him and sign someone more important.

Special Teams
There is no Depth Chart Settings for this, which is sad as I have an Emergency Backup Running Back I want to be my Returner. However, for the most part this is your 1st WR, who may get subbed for if he is fatigued, though I am unsure as to who subs in for him, as I have seen my 2nd Wide Receiver and 3rd Defensive Back both get returns.

Again, this is a quick work up, if anyone notices anything off, please say so. I may make changes to this if I notice anything as well.

Later,

Thanks for posting this. I have been trying to figure out how to use this depth chart. Not much information given to us in the game about how to use the depth chart!

NP and agreed, there is certainly a lack of information, which I believe is turning people away from the game.

I get the Dev Team is busy fixing stuff, which is awesome, but having information for stuff that does not change, or need to be changed is a priority, especially for less than patient people, or those who just want to play a game and not go through all the BS of reading forums, hoping someone put up an answer to their "what button does what" question, or needing to post that question and hope someone responds in 10 or so mins, because they only have 30 mins to play to begin with and 20 mins of that was wasted trying to find information they NEED to play the game but can't.

It's really an industry wide problem that began when consoles starting taking over the gaming world, then spiraled WAAAAAY down when "Early Access" became a thing. "Oh hey, we can develop a quarter of a game and people will buy it, but we have to tell them it's not finished...and wait, we don't actually have to finish it!?" HELL YEAH!!!!!

I'm a former tester turned designer who is extremely bitter about it, not going into it here, not the place, sorry for quick rant.

Also, not saying Axis Games is doing this, just got pissy for second there. Axis Games in my opinion is doing a great job.

Take care,

Thats a good idea to show what's being worked on atm. Trello will be suggested.

Definitely need some UI in the game to aid with this imo.

I actually booted up Axis 17, to see how this changed with 18, and I liked what they did last year way better. In 17, there was a graphical shot of the formation in the depth chart (by uniform number), so you could place the player in the proper position. Maybe, since this had already been coded into the game it can be patched back?

Oh yeah, I would much prefer a graphical representation of the depth chart over the spreadsheet list we have now.

Take care,

Many of the best games in my collection, digital and physical, came from Kickstarter or Early Access origins. There's something to be said for being able to make a niche game, and have the people who are interested in said niche help you fund it, instead of just shelving the idea.

I've bought dozens, and really only feel burned by two of them. One because it went off in a gameplay direction opposite of what I would have liked, and the other because they added an oppressive EULA over a month after launch. Still, I've had a better rate of return buying EA games during their EA period than I have buying non-EA games on Steam.
diamok Sep 19, 2018 @ 6:00pm
Sounds like it's working out for you then, which is awesome, but for me, the degradation of the industry began about 15 to 20 years ago, when companies like EA decided they didn't need to release demos any more, then didn't need to include a manual, then came licencing...and I'm not just talking EA, they were just on the forefront of the decline, there were plenty of others that contributed... Before that even, Sierra was sold to an e-commerce company who's CEO (Walter Forbes) was also on the board of directors of Sierra...fishy, maybe a bit.

Anyway, I'm not against kickstarter, not at all, kickstarter has guidelines and rules their users must follow, these protect backers if the kickstarter fails, isn't released, followed through on and so on. Steam...apparently, does not...though I honestly do not know for sure. Oh and I have 30+ games I've purchased on Steam right now.

Anyway, I"m bitter of how the Entertainment Software Industry has changed and declined from consumer oriented, to bank role oriented. But don't get me wrong, everyone is entitled to make as much money as they can, more power to them. But if people stopped buy "Early Access", they would stop selling them, it's a two headed beast now really, one head wants to make as much as possible with as little effort as possible, the other head wants as much as possible, while paying out as little as possible. Unfortunately, the bigger head is releasing the "Early Access", not the little head.

So it's obvious we do not agree on the topic, hopefully we can agree to disagree and move on to enjoying this game and it's community.

Take care,

Thank you for the guide DiamokDiamok, nice to have :)
(And an aside, i have purchsed fantastic early access games and also a kick starter which would never have been produced without either )

I assumed most of this but thank you for confirming.

I think in 2019 we're going to restructure the depth chart to be by actual position instead of position group (ie., LT, LG, C, RG, RT, WRX, WRX) instead of us OL and WR. That should help things a good bit and also give you more control over your team!

That would be my definite preference! Glad to hear it!
