Ice mining is deadly and useless

My humans start mining ice blocks as soon there are any on the map. My population of 8 just died because one by one they would go to that one ice block, hack at it for a few whacks and then give up the ghost.
All my populations died out in this way, makes the game a bit frustrating.
Is this intentional?
In one case it looked as if an ice block appeared on the same tile as a farm, and the farmer died.

If you avoid letting ice blocks spawn, or invent clothing, it shouldn't be an issue.

If you invent clothing, be sure to provide the proper resources.
