In no particular order, and sort of from memory because I haven't played it in a good long while now...
The most powerful weapon in the game is a capacitor, especially when appropriately buffed so it's long range and got a big charge. Its only drawback is the fact you've got to manually aim it - so its best deployment is near your base, and its best usage is to kill bosses.
Rockets are super powerful but have a habit of blowing your own stuff up. So position them where they don't have a line of sight to any of your other buildings.
Disruptors are also super powerful but will blow any support buildings up! Make sure to research disruptor shielding.
The first buff you want to apply to any turrets is usually scanners. Keeping the enemies at a distance is a good strategy.
To that end, walls, tangleweb, and a well placed spreader cannon will keep them a long way away. Support the spreader cannon with a bunch of smaller guns and the cannon will stun the gidrahs so they don't actually attack the wall, and the smaller guns pick them off while they're stunned.
Maximise your buffs with careful arrangement so that every buff building affects the maximum number of turrets simultaneously. I seem to recall I'd arrange like a tight "cluster" of scanners, batteries, reactors, etc. and then place the cannons as close as I could around them so they'd all be super-buffed for minimum cash outlay.
The same applies to mining crystals... buff those refineries to the maximum and you'll harvest an absolute fortune from a single crystal.
The game's difficulty is directly based on your cash and assets, that is difficulty = money + buildings value. The difficulty value is calculated in realtime, and directly affects the gidrahs speed and hitpoints, instantaneously. There is no point in hoarding money - the game basically forces you to spend it to stay alive. You are rewarded at the end if you don't lose too many buildings as all your buildings are automatically sold for you at the end of the level (at a loss, obviously) so you get to keep a large proportion of the money you spent.
It follows then that if the gidrahs kick your ass, you'll suddenly have no money, and they'll suddenly get less aggressive and easier to kill.
And finally use the fast-forward button a lot to skip past those dull moments waiting for stuff to happen.
Do buffs stack?
Like i'm doing here posting in september when the last post on a thread was in july. This often brings old topics that have been resolved back to the top of a board and suddenly it's almost as if the problem wasn't solved in the first place.
I think i definitely win the necroposting award here lol,..7 years later. Good lord, that is a long freaking time. Not gonna get a response but i wanted to continue this lol
