Why is gear display HUD element not available in cockpit view?

With FOV set approximately correctly for my setup (It's hard to be exact because the UI doesn't give a real FOV angle, but that's another issue...) I can't always see the gear display on the steering wheel (depending on type of car and where the gear display is).

So why can't I use the HUD display? All other HUD elements are visible in cockpit view, except the gear display! This seems like either a silly bug, or a stupid design decision.

And why is the value displayed on my Fanatec wheel's display my speed, instead of my gear? I don't really need to know how fast I'm going, but it's pretty important to know which gear I'm in. Showing gear on the Fanatec's display should be default, or at least an option somewhere.

And while i'm having a moan, why are there no virtual mirrors? Even with a triple screen setup, a lot of the cars' mirrors are off screen.

I love the game on the whole, but little things like this just spoil it.
