Career Mode Grid Penalties?
I'm wondering how grid penalties work in career mode? I understand that when you select the option for a new engine or gearbox before the allotted time, it will provide you with a warning about grid penalties.. however i wonder how it works parc ferme?

I go into Q sessions with trash configs and engines that are laps away from blowing, so that i can start the race with another engine that i've already ordered and as a result don't get a pen. Is this allowed or is this something the game misses?

I would also like to know...

If you change engines between qualify and race, you get penalities. You can't cheat your way.
However you can use bad engines and other parts during practice and change it for qualify wihtout penalties. I don't mean a new engine though, just switching to another you already own or you'll also get penalties.

see the thing is.. i take a 85% unit into Q and then swap for the unit that's 30% for the race.. and i've got nothing. i get no warning for a pen and i still start where I quailfied

That's not a new engine, so no penalties I guess. I never tried this way.
I thought you meant in your first post that you ordered a new engine for the race. You would get penalties in that case for sure.

Do you have parc ferme' turned off in your options?

IRL
You can not swap power unit components (the engine) as you stated post quali (parc ferme').
The only time you can switch out a power unit component under parc ferme is.
1. if the part is damaged
2. the replacement part must be like for like
3. the replacement part must come from the alloted components (or suffer normal penalties)

This is covered under the 2019 Sporting Regulations:
article 34.2 (pg 26-28)
article 34.6 (pg 28)
article 36.2 (pg 30)

Breaching this rule results in starting from pit lane and must follow Article 36.2. Since that's not in the game perhaps thats why you are able to circumvent it/they didn't implement it.

Parc Ferme is on and I know for sure because any setup I make is locked when I go into the race.

so what is meant to happen under this scenario? if I go into Q with a 85% ICE and TC, note these are let's say the first of the allocated units, and after Q i swap them both for new (or newer.. ie units at 30%) to have them for the race. They are both listed as the 2nd allocated units. Am i suppose to get a pen in this case?

in any of my cases, i have not yet ordered a new part which im aware results in grid pens as the warning message states. Its just simply between existing parts.
