Yanno that thing our wolves do where they shake the snowshoe hare in their mouth like it's a toy?

That's a thing canines do to kill small prey quickly. And is what stranger wolves and coyotes do when they catch small pups during raids (though coyotes don't have an animation for it in game, if I recall).

So that's why coyotes kill pups in one bite when they are smaller. They're incredibly weak and vulnerable to them when they are younger, like a snowshoe hare.

They also aren't planning to eat the competition, so they just focus on the kill while there is an opportunity.

Cougars and bears intend to eat the pups, so the gameplay is adjusted to rescue any they manage to grab instead. Keeps things varied so the predators aren't all exactly the same!

It's the same headshake animation when your wolf catches a hare or a baby ungulates in the grass (or if you've ever seen a dog in real life going wild over a toy). It's a very specific kind of action that for wild canids is used to quickly kill small prey once it's secure in their jaws.
Ya the stranger wolves shake your pup when the kill them.I watched one do it to my pups traumatized me for a hot second.

That was in the game for a long time, they explained why that is in this dev log:
