Why you should just turn off 'Pup RNG Deaths' completely!
So since the saga has come out I have put several hours into the game over multiple saves as well as my girlfriend has done so, we discovered a pretty telling (likely intentional) flaw in how the game handles pup deaths. No matter how hard or well you play, you will almost always come out of the saga and into the new year with around 4-5 pups. Why is this?

Well the game has an artificial system in, maximum litter size in the game with Pup RNG Deaths on 'All Types' is 7. Even if no predators get your pups and all of them manage to recover from sicknesses (thanks to the Youthful Prowess perk this is very easy to do). The game will take out at least 1-2 pups anyways with 'unknown fates'.

So at this point, unless you enjoy seeing your pups be taken from you for zero reason because of a built in game design that will just take your pups from you to be sure you only have 4-5 pups per year, you might as well just take 5 guaranteed pups per year.

The unknown fates especially irk me as it is not due to them wandering off, you could be all together in the Young Hunters quest, 100% health, 100% food and still somehow your pup just vanishes??? All to meet this 4-5 built in game limit. :steamsad:

But yeah that's my opinion on it. If you don't enjoy losing your pups to BS, just turn that setting totally off as it is BUILT IN TO THE GAME to kill your pups because heaven forbid you played well and got all 6 or 7 through to Young Hunters, time to unknown fate them so you only have 4-5. :steamfacepalm:

I edited my post as I missed that part.

Ultimately, you still chose to engage with all the possibilities that may be, as you chose to press onwards with your pre-saga save rather than begin fresh.
Remember the game is still in early access.

Things like this happening with old saves are inevitable as the game has to move forward.

I don't have pre-saga saves lol.

Why was it enabled, then?
The game gives you an option to choose your setting when you start a new game. It is the "default" choice as that is part of the intended game experience, but you are more than free to just turn it off right then and there.

It isn't being forced on you and you aren't being made to live with it. You just accepted the setting and decided you didn't like it.

This was before anything had been said or found out about unknown fates because the devs did not say a single word about it. I thought it was only sickness the RNG toggle was talking about so I left it on which... it is on by default.

Then when unknown fates got found out about and it became toggleable, I hesitated on turning it off because of the litter limit but eventually did because unknown fates suck more then having fewer pups in a litter even if it contradicts with diversity. I hate the toggle for this.

Removed some comments that were disrespectful and didn't add to the discussion. It's fine to dislike a feature and think of it a certain way, but it remains important to be respectful about it with each other, and if there's an impasse in discussion then it may be best to agree to disagree and move on from it.

Thanks, Loach.

I'm going to add that Unknown Fates are explicitly named in the changelog that came with the v2.0.0 Saga release. It is nearly first thing. They didn't pull a fast one on anyone and have been very transparent about the changes made to the game.

The settings are also All Types, Sickness Only, and None, so it is clear that there are other types of deaths possible. It is not the developers' fault. They provided you with the information to allow you to choose the setting that works best for you.
My wolves, dispite having 5 pups each year, are cursed to only 3 or 4. Because oF cOuRsE ONE PUP has to get killed by another animal! (the 3 part is from my wolf's first 3 litters. I think one was six, another five, and one seven.)
Loach 25. jan. kl. 16.31
If they're getting killed by other animals, like coyotes and bears in raids, then that is not RNG

The only RNG deaths are disease (they die of illness) or unknown fates (they disappear and you never know what happened).
