Unlockable Coats?
I've gotten quite a few unlockable coats unintentionally, but I have two questions:

1. How old does a pup have to be for the coat to be unlocked? Or is it that as soon as the pup is born, you get the coat?

2. What is your best technique for getting unlockable coats? Certain mates? Personality (if personality has anything to do with pup coats)

1. You unlock the coats when the growing pups quest starts. This is when you can see what coats they actually have.

2. I don't know the best technique (I just got them all naturally) but I don't think the personality of your mate determines what coats your pups have. The best chance at getting all is to have a Kk and kk pairing though.

1. Coats are unlocked once you finish the loaf at rendezvous quest.

2. gray x gray for the gray coats and black x black for the black coats. Personality doesn't affect coats. I just go with gray x black and that way I can get any coat possible. I've gotten most of them now without really trying.

2. Personality has nothing to do with coats. It's the coat genetics that decide if the pup gets a black coat or a gray coat. A wolf will be gray if they are kk. They will be black if they are Kk or KK. (you can see what genetics your wolf and your mate have in the Pack info in-game).

But there's no way to further decide what coats they will get. If the pup is black, they have a chance to get any of the black coats, and if they are gray, they have a chance to get any of the gray coats.

You can make it more likely to get the Unlockable Coats if you turn off any coat DLCs you have. I don't know how to do this, since I've never done it, but I know this is how a lot of people get Unlockable Coats. Turning off the DLC coats means that the game has less coats to choose from and thus Unlockable Coats are more likely to turn up.

I don't want to sound dumb, but what does kk stand for?

k is the gene that makes a wolf gray. And K is the gene that makes a wolf black. Each wolf gets a k or a K from each of their parents. So a wolf can end up having the genes kk, Kk, or KK. kk means the wolf is gray and KK means the wolf is black. And Kk means the wolf is black, but is carrying the gray gene.

You can see whether your wolf and their mate are KK, Kk, or kk, in the Pack Info. KK and KK wolves will have black pups, Kk and Kk wolves can have black or gray pups, KK and kk wolves will have black pups, and so on.

Kk and KK are black coats and kk are grey coats. It's a whole thing, that's very complicated. You can see which one your mate has when you look at their bio.

I suggest you watch the "Genes Behind the Scenes" video on the Wolfquest youtube channel, it explains it way better than I could. I don't know if there's a rule against linking youtube videos here but I haven't seen anything so...

Also in the video they kinda treat it like KK isn't in the game. It is, it's just not common!

You could also use the wiki if you are unsure which pup coat will result in what coat. the eyebrows coat has a specific pup coat to itself like how the dlc coats, Small Dot and Little T do.

To get the black NPC coats (such as Chocosnout) easier, disable coat DLC and get a pair where one of the wolves are KK black.

When a wolf is KK, all their pups will be Kk or KK black. It can be difficult to find a KK mate, but you can make your wolf KK by selecting a black coat, adjusting the coat tint ever so slightly and reloading the game until your wolf bio says you are KK.
