Need a third party account?

I saw the tab that said "Requries Blahblahblah Account: optional". Do I have to register outside of Steam to play this game? It looks like a cool game, but I'm at a point in my life where I'm not going to play something where I have to start a separate account on another platform to play it.

The game has its own account system because it's available elsewhere than Steam, so we can't rely on Steam accounts. The WQ account is required for multiplayer, in-game chat, and achievements. It just requires a username and email address to create an account in the game.
