ABZU - Basically Journey, but in the ocean and likely up your alley. You play as a diver, but the environments are really pretty and you can interact with some of the wildlife (riding orca, turtles etc while they swim around the areas). It's got a non dialogue story involving a shark and it's very pretty.
The Long Return - A blocky stylistic platformer/puzzle game and very simple in story, but you play as a little cougar cub through the whole thing. You solve puzzles and have to get around obstacles to get from level to level.
If you don't have them, other Shelter titles. I don't recommend Shelter 3, though. I did not enjoy that game in the slightest at all, unfortunately. Shelter 1, Paws and Meadow are fun however (Meadow is more fun with friends imo).
If you like survival simulations you can try one of the numerous dinosaur simulation games. I personally play Saurian and Path of Titans (not on Steam).
FireWatch has you in a watch tower in a wilderness following a story. There's some free exploration elements. The way I can best describe what it was like playing it is a short novel put into a game.
That Disney Aladdin and Lion King report on Steam is not my favorite port of those games, but The Lion King is a typical 2D platformer where you play as Simba through various levels based on the original movie. It isn't very stable though (at least not the Steam release). Sometimes it crashes on startup and sometimes it works. Finicky.
Someone mentioned WOLF DOS and I played the heck out of that as a kid, but the pixels can be very eye straining and you are sort of doomed to eventually run out of food no matter what you do. I recommend its sequel, LION DOS, instead. The hunting mechanics are annoyingly hard, but you can actually switch between and control all the lions in your pride instead of just one, which can help get you out of tough spots.
Holy crap THAT brings back memories...
However, while it used to be on par with the old WQ, it doesn't come close to the Anniversary Edition. The graphics are ugly, the length of a game is way too long, and it has a ton of bugs (which will never be fixed as the game has been abandoned). I did enjoy it back then though, so you might want to give it a go if you want something different, but don't compare it too much to WQ or you might be bored or disappointed.
There is also Ancestors : The Humankind Odyssey. Similarly to WQ, it is a realistic survival game, except that here, you play as an ape. But you also get to look and find companions, mate, protect babies, explore etc. However, Ancestors is much more focused on the generation system (as your species evolve and unlock new abilities at each generation).
Niche : A genetic Survival Game might also interest you. However, there is very little roleplay in Niche, as the game is focused on the evolution system. You quickly find yourself with douzens of animals, which are almost all disposable as you'll only breed the ones whose genome is interesting. And since you change generations very quicly here, you don't really get to get attached to your creatures. As WolfWraith020809 said, it's more a micromanaging game than a RP/survival game.
And finally, there is Ark. Yes, Ark, the survival dinosaur game. There is a mod that actually allows you to play as a dino/creature instead of a human. And while there isn't as much feature as a "real" RP/survival game (as it wasn't the purpose of the game), you can still hunt, find a mate, raise a litter and form packs. However, the vanilla game does allow you to breed tamed dinosaurs, and they have a genetic system, so it might also interest you to play as a human.
Also, while I wouldn't recommend getting them right now, this genre is rising in popularity, so there is a whole bunch a game in Early Access that you might want to keep an eye on, such as :
- The Isle
- Artemishea
- Animalia
- Day Of Dragons
- Saurian
- Beast of Bermuda
I do not recommend Artemishea. I have it, and it is simply not in a state I would deem recommendable. Wait another year or two then check on that one again.
Animalia Survival looks interesting and more polished, though it isn't out yet. I'd say keep an eye on it, see what reviews are like a month or two after it is released, then make a judgement call then.
I do not yet trust Day of Dragons. Fool me once shame on you, not looking to risk being fooled another time. I plan to wait another 2-3 years before really looking into that one again.
i played/ enjoy(ed) :
niche,
wobble dogs,
old friends dog game
( i have it on mobile idk if/how to get it on pc but its a chill game, can be slow at times but it also runs while not on the game, you care for elderly dogs!)
i also liked cattails
( i got it on switch i have not checked where to get it on pc, it reminds me of stardew valley and the warrior cat books )
