How to accurately determine mate personality?
With the slough creek episode out i'm trying to avoid mates with certain personalities, particularly those with lazy or cautious ones, but this seems to be rather tricky. It's almost like the wolves you choose have one personality when courting them, a different one during the trial period, and then another different personality during the slough creek episode. During courting with one wolf, they rarely sat down, and never laid down. During the trial period however, they started laying and sitting down frequently. In the trial period they were bold and did a lot of the attacking during hunts, but in slough creek they became much more cautious. Am I just reading the signs wrong? What are clear signs of a potential mate's personality traits? Is sitting down an indication of laziness or only laying down? What does an energetic mate do during courting?

I had a mate that seemed fairly energetic during courting and I noticed they ran around me a lot, and I think another sign of being energetic is performing the play bow emote multiple times. Sometimes my energetic mate will do it three or four times in a row trying to get my attention. Sitting or laying down I think are signs of laziness, as well as not participating in hunts as much. I'm also a little perplexed at my mate's change in behavior. She seemed bold and energetic on AM and now barely helps me with anything in Slough Creek.

I noticed this as well. My mate was energetic during the courting and the hunt, but after that, she wasn't helping with hunting very much, and would just circle me. She's very aggressive though, since she growls at everything

i'm not sure, but i think this is how you can find out the personality:
Bold- will dash into fights and hunts with little to no hesitation, no need for input from you except for "who we fightin'?." Cautious mates will wait for you to make a move, or until they "feel sure" about their odds. (I'm not sure if you can get a feel for Bold/Cautiousness before the trial, during courtship. Please tell me how if there's a way!)
Energetic- If they're running around you a lot. (Could probably get mixed up with loner, as loners tend to run away.) Lazy wolves will sit or lay down often.
Social- will respond to emotes quickly, and stick around you. (except for the beginning of courtship, when they will keep their distance in case you are not friendly.) Loner wolves will tend to shy away and keep more distance.

this is all from observation and the in-game help guide, some of this might be wrong, and there are a lot of comments of people complaining about how their mate's personality completely changes multiple times during courtship, trial, amethyst, and slough creek. i tried my best though :winter2019happydog:

As like the others, my mate was bold and confident in AM, but in slough creek he was a submissive cautious mate. Which means he wasn’t exactly helpful, since he wouldnt defend me and the pups from wolves and other predators :/

Same, in Slough Creek it seemed like the mate was suddenly an almost completely useless food thief whose response to any situation is to run in circles.

Perhaps it's a bug? I saw someone say there might be one where personalities don't exactly carry over into Slough Creek-- though that's a guess. I don't exactly know why else they'd suddenly switch from a confident wolf to a submissive one personally.

I'm kinda leaning towards this tbh. Would certainly explain the confusion for people who thought they found a good mate to have pups with, only for them to be useless partners.

Thanks, though, after some testing it seems mate personality doesn't actually effect how useful they are in slough creek, just what they do around the den. Also, you can see if a wolf during courting has a bold/cautious personality (somewhat) if they fight other potential mates for your attention. This is a bit rare, as they will only fight other wolves that are not from the same pack as them, and not always an accurate way to guess the personality depending on how many wolves there are in one pack fighting another dispersal pack (for instance, if your courting 2 wolves of the same pack and 1 wolf from another pack shows up, they will most likely run from the 2 because they are outnumbered).
honestly, know this is an old disc. but for me in slough creek, my mate at the courting wasnt really into it and was sitting which made me think she was lazy (but she was a 4 star soooo). but when we had pups she was more bold and defensive and energetic. she helps with hunts and warding off predators good. she growls at anything that gets too close and will sit a distance away from the food in the direction of a predator to keep it away. so im glad i didnt judge her off of her first meeting with me.

Locking this due to necro post. It is better to make a new thread for a topic than revive an old one (especially if it is a few years old).
