Making a kill in a hex will also strengthen your claim to that particular hex as well as chasing off stranger wolves if some come to defend.
In the winter I didn't sleep much, mostly because it's just a waste of time. Stamina isn't needed for much besides sprinting after prey anyways. You can move around the map easily and quickly by just running (double tapping W for auto move is a lifesaver).
When patrolling, I usually set the scent post pretty close to the border of another hex I own, minimising the travel time.
Don't stress if your hexes are above 50% strength. It's when they fall below 50% that you want to make a trip out to strengthen them. Below 50%, make the effort to pee on your scent post. It pops it back up a lot. Don't be married to hexes that are not immediately around your den. Be willing to shift your territory if a hex in another place is easier to get to. Snipe weak hexes from other packs if you happen to be passing through to give yourself a buffer above 15 hexes.
Also, from what I've heard from other players, once you have pups, keeping around 7-10 hexes is doable instead of 15+. Just might have to deal with more stranger wolves on occasion. I've been keeping my hex count right around 15 with short dips in 14 hexes when the other packs get uppity.
