Finding a mate as a female black wolf
I've been trying to find a mate for hours, occasionally starting a new game. As a black wolf I know that black dispersals will have lower diversity than greys, but is there any chance to find a dark grey, white or black 4 star dispersal? Or should I just settle for a brown/cream colored mate?

I found a black wolf with four stars with my female wolf Nutmeg, so it's definitely a possibility. It might just take time to look for them.

You can't get a 4 star genetically black mate as a genetically black wolf, unfortunately. I would start a new game after you've seen about 3 different dispersal groups and didn't find the mate you're looking for. Dispersals are permanent in each save file (and if they die they stay dead) and you can only get new/different ones by starting a new game.

A good while ago Dave said this on another thread:

So if you have a gray wolf and meet a gray prospective mate, then three stars is your maximum possible diversity.

By the way he worded it, I'm taking it that Genetic Coat Color (black or gray) counts as a whole star towards the diversity rating of dispersals, meaning that it's impossible to find wolves with the same genetic coat color that are 4 stars (hence why grays are always 3 max if your wolf is also gray).

The only way you'd probably find a 4 star black mate as a black wolf is if they weren't actually black (ex: they were one of those coats that either are a) look black but are actually gray, or b) if tinted brightly enough become genetically gray).

I have personally had multiple genetically black wolves find other genetically black mates. So, either it was a bug or this feature simply isn't implemented.

What do you mean by "had multiple genetically black wolves find other genetically black mates"???????

Of course you can find genetically black mates in game as a black wolf.

4 star blacks, however, while your wolf is also genetically black should be impossible if I remember correctly, because GCC counts as a whole star (from how it seems to work).

If you find a 4 star "black" wolf while your wolf is black one of you is likely not actually genetically black and only looks like it - again, due to tinting, as some black coats can be tinted light enough to count as genetically gray, and certain gray coats have to be tinted down pretty dark before they are considered genetically black.

What I meant is I have had 4 star mates who are genetically black with my genetically black wolf. There are pelts that are not effected by tint in that way. It is possible it is simply a beta bug or something, but I have had it happen and I have played enough to know the different coat genetics.
