Wonky Controls?
Wasn't sure if this was a bug or me being awful at using the game controls, so I figured I'd start a new thread.

As I play the game, I find it increasingly difficult to use the directional controls. It almost feels as though the directional keys (WASD or the arrow keys) are stuck to the directions on the map (NSEW, or the Y and X axis). Sometimes they're normal: W means forward, A means left, S means back, D means right. Other times, though, they're all switched (still haven't figured out which key means which direction when they get screwed up - definitely not just inverted).

I've tried adjusting the camera angle quite a few times and messing with the controls, to no avail. I think it happens mostly around hunting (which is WHY it's messing me up so much), but I'm not entirely sure.

Sorry if this has been posted before - or if I'm just being dumb. I appreciate any help.

Happens to me too, but I've never quite understood what causes it. It might be a weird path-finding bug that has to do with the way your wolf moves when its locked onto a target, but I don't really have the knowledge to say so. It doesn't really happen when I'm exploring or easter egg hunting so I'm pretty sure it has something to do with the targeting system. My guess is that it just needs to be ironed out a bit, but the best thing to do is try to figure out what might be causing it or how to replicate it and send a bug report with those details.

What drives me a little bonkers is the double tap controls that lock your character into running. Sometimes I'm trying to make very small, acute adjustments in my characters movement and it locks into a sprint. I'm hoping that we can toggle that in the future.

@bigsad : It sounds like you have camera lock-on triggered at times when you don't realize it -- that turns the arrow above targeted animals red, so if the controls are behaving oddly, check to see if that's the case. (LMB to lock, LMB again to unlock.) That keeps the camera pointed at the target, so then A and D keys make your wolf move left or right relative to the camera view. See if that's what's going on. If that's not it, then trying to analyze it more precisely would be helpful. We're not aware of any bugs in the steering system.

I have this issue too and have since the game started, I started a fresh game and I can be going one way, turn, and press the W key, and my wolf will jerk to previous direction it was. I've re-mapped the controls multiple times as well. It seems like the game is fighting that your direction be controlled by the mouse and then the WASD keys to me? It's very annoying to have to steer with both camera AND keyboard keys, which seems to be what the game has been wanting me to do? I wish there was a way to lock the camera to follow you but there doesn't seem to be an option for that :C

You can just use the W key and mouse to steer, then the camera will follow. The ASD keys are designed to give you more options for maneuvering, especially useful when interacting with other animals, when you want to go in a different direction immediately without curving around with mouse steering. So those don't have camera-follow. They're especially useful when the camera is locked onto a target, as they let you circle your target while you look for a bite-point to attack. But you can use only W+mouse and play the game just fine.

Again, if you lock onto a target, than that does change things, so be sure to check that if the controls suddenly seem to be behaving oddly.

If you think something else odd is going on, it would be very helpful to have a detailed bug report, as we are unaware of any issues.

@BinksDaWolf You want an option to disable auto-run, or just adjust the double-tap timing?

With a controller it's almost impossible to fight off two wolves as the controls and camera view are so bad. Cant turn around before being mauled.

@Eleanor do you have the public beta build or the main released version (which has very partial controller support)

Sorry I haven't replied. I'm not locked onto an animal, though here's a weird thing: in the beta build, it's very difficult for me to lock onto one. I've only managed to do it once or twice successfully. Every time the symbol to lock on pops up, I click as hard as I can and nothing works. It worked fine in the normal version.

Not really sure what's up, but if anything comes to mind let me know. Thanks!
