Soldiers will generally and gradually lose composure over the course of the campaign. Be sure to have enough supplies every day, so the soldiers can eat. (You can find inside levels, and buy in the shop)
Also if you retry/ reload missions a lot you will lose composure. Random events will on average help you out a bit more than not, but no guarantee that you are lucky every time. Remember you can tweak difficulty (including amount of composure loss) to your personal liking in the settings menu.

What can I do to improve composure other than participating in random events, any other ways?

Don't reload/ retry levels, and be sure to have enough supplies. Unfortunately the soldiers are not located in a healthy place.

Why do you punish players for reloading a mission? That just seems very unfair. If we want to save our game and reload if we do poorly, we shouldn't be penalized. No other game does that, so this is something very unique, but I'm not sure it's something good.

This makes absolutely sense as this is a "roguelike" aspect, so that all decisions matter and which makes every fight more tense. You could compare it with Darkest Dungeon for example, where you can flee but not reload. Or you can compare it to XCom or Xenonauts on Ironman where reloading isn't a thing.

This works really well in Broken Lines as the Combat works great for the most part, its a super polished game.

That said, if you absolutely don't like it, you can make a custom difficulty and just remove the penalty for restarting.

Thank you again, and sorry for the double posting about this same issue.
