Game not Launching
When attempting to launch Exile, the game instantly closes down. I have verified the files, as well as doing a fresh install. When trying to run the exe in Steam's local folders, it does mentioned two missing DLL files (binkw32 and mss32) which could be the issue, however reinstalling did not provide said files. ResidualVM also fails to launch the game.

Any suggestions or assistance would be greatly appreciated!

Edit: Adding the two DLL's does not solve the issue.

Hey all, thanks for the heads up on this, and thanks to Sunscreemer for the temp fix. I've got this fixed up on the steam side of things. The launcher points at this improperly named residualvm.ini file now, so you'll need to restart steam to get the changed launch options. If you've renamed the file to fix the issue, you'll either need to rename it back to residualvm.ini, or do a verify on your files and steam will put it back.

Our apologies to everyone who ran into this. Long story short, not exactly sure what went wrong here, I'm not seeing anything to point fingers at, outside of the ini file is suddenly incorrectly named. But on a positive note, the Residual crew have a new bugfix build that we're working at putting put sooner than later here with some fixes and a few nice improvements. Thanks again everyone.

I you have not already; check windows update and make sure it is updating not just windows files but all Microsoft programs as well and that the system is up to date. I would also make sure all of your drivers are up-to-date. Are you playing on windows 10?

Same issue started today. Played last night with no problems. I didn't have any windows update that I know of overnight. Playing on Windows 10

Same for me -- it worked fine last night, and stopped today. Also on Windows 10.

I am on Windows 10, yes. Only thing update found was a Windows defender update. The issue seems to be specific to Exile, as Revelation and realMyst work fine.

Me too, same problem

I'm seeing the same thing on Windows 10. For a couple of the instances, the log in Event Viewer/Windows Logs/System says that M3.exe couldn't load mss32.dll and binkw32.dll. When I reinstalled, WebRoot reported malware present, but being terribly modern and user friendly, I can't get specifics.

+1...

I found a workaround. Go to the install folder (the default on 64-bit Windows is C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Myst III Exile) and copy residualvm.ini. Rename it to myst3.ini.

THANKS!
I wonder what changed to cause this to happen?

Another answer is to use residualvm from th x86 folder, no need to copy anything and launch Myst from it. Seems like anyone with Windows 10 had the game stop woking on Steam yesterday.

You're such a genius!

This works- make sure file extensions are on so you rename the .ini file not the .exe file, you may need to open the game folder by right clicking the Myst III listing in your Steam library to open the file location via Properties- local files- browse local files (you may not see it if opening through Windows as you don't see all the files, if you still don't see it turn on show hidden files, easiest to find it via Steam though)

Wonder how the error crept in, hopefully the makers will address this in case the fix messes anything up (in theory it shouldn't as you've copied the possibly wrongly named file in case!)

Residual VM is the software that runs old 3d games btw.

Same problem. And I have absolutely no idea what you're talking about. Just started playing games and all I know how to do is type. Can any one send pictures?
