Get it if you want. Pretty hard to be upset at a $12-$20 purchase with as much content as Back 4 Blood has.
Just got it today myself. Had a surprising amount of fun, but then again, due to listening to all the negative criticism, my expectations were pretty much lower than the sea floor. If that's where you're starting, you probably won't be disappointed, but then again I don't know your budget. Save your money if this is the only thing you can afford.
I have never failed to find other players in quickplay, but starting your own campaign it's likely you'll run into that problem.
The only other mode (ignoring PvP) is Trials of the Worm (might be DLC 3 only though) which you can crank up the difficulty ridiculously high if you wish to be challenged to that degree. DLC has added a good amount of content. Tala in DLC 3 is a really handy character to have in your runs (free special chest that gets you really good stuff early in runs).
B4B if you want some rogue lite while shooting zombies in well crafted apocalypse with lots to learn and grind, a less linear grind than WWZ. I've done both. WWZ got me about ~500 hours, I'm about to load into B4B going onto my ~1170th hour.
This game require a proper party with strategy, it is a "coop" game, so if you just want to play solo, avoid.
They're better than you in almost every conceivable way, and preferable to 90% of players, and that's being generous. They're monstrously overtuned to make up for their crappy positioning, since the AI also breaks sometimes, stop moving, don't shoot, etc. When they break it can be really, really bad, or just annoying, but you won't have issues if you run with only bots, provided you can aim well, or just use a melee build.
Lastly, you don't need them with you to close the saferoom door, they can sleep outside, and it counts as a full team closing the door, so you won't have issues with that incase they get stuck somewhere.
Thanks again and have a nice day
