Lots of developers exist like this but very few are good at advertising this well and hyping up this much for their games. TRS just gets more attention than others.
Really glad Valve "stole" the spotlight off TRS for L4D's development. If it took them nearly a decade and a half to release blood that looks like jam, I can't imagine what we'd have in L4D if they didn't get the boot. Good on Valve, booted out their liabilities and released a great game that'll possibly last for 2 decades before people stop talking about it as much.
Denial - "I dont see any red flags. This game is going to be good."
Anger - "Crowbcat is a LIAR! The game is fine! Better than L4D2!"
Depression - "This is BS. The bad people review bombed the game and now the servers are shutting down!"
Bargaining - "This cant be happening. You cant shut the servers down. Please give mod support at least. Please!"
Acceptance - "Its fine. Whatever. Im ok with the servers shutting down. I got my moneys worth. On to the next thing."
Advertisement has died down already, in time this will bring the number of potential buyers to a near halt.
Old players don't have an infinite shelf life, some of them will start to go too.
Eventually, regional matchmaking will start to become an issue, there simply won't be enough games at varying times in the day, leading to a very clear player shortage, this will drive even more players to stop playing, as they simply cannot find lobbies when they have time to play.
The number of players will be so low eventually (some people predicting this within the next year by looking at how fast the playerbase is already declining) that TRS will decide it's no longer beneficial to keep the game running. The numbers are too low to give new players long-term engagement, and even less people will buy the game due to this problem.
The player increases will drop to a halt, while existing players drop like flies, no new content, no updates, nothing, just the same thing they've been playing all this time, with all its problems and flaws. Profits are nonexistent, putting the cost of server maintenance higher than the profit they're pulling.
Then, the servers shut down, as there is no financial incentive to keep bleeding money on a dead game.
There's no source for this, it's a pattern that all games who shut down their servers follow. It will always lead to this for bad games, as there is little reason to continue playing with a broken toy on a shelf filled with hundreds of other better, more functional toys.
Plus... the developers did kind of kick their playerbase in the teeth with the abandonment insult. That includes you btw. I'll kick their teeth in return as much as I personally want to, metaphorically. If they want it to stop, they can justify everyone's contempt and disappear into obscurity until they've "finished" their next cashgrab, or they can return and actually fix their game, either way works. It's TRS, we all know the second option does not exist.
Will B4B be different? I don't have a crystal ball, apologies. But it sure does seem the vid OP posted is pretty accurate.
Evolve was taken offline and cannot be found in the steam store. It does, however, have the tiniest of player bases that is hovering around 30-50 people on average. My brilliant theory is that there is a small village in the Himalayas of die hard gamers keeping it alive.
Back 4 Blood is a game that relies heavily on a player base in order for it to thrive. This is not Borderlands 1 or 2 or some other games who have multiplayer as a nice bonus on the side.
The game's lack of mod support in addition to the lack of official support ensures the game will continue to slowly lose players. Even without official support from TRS if the modding community could get their hands on the game they give it much needed quality of life changes as well as add unofficial campaigns, free weapon and character skins, and other goods.
Edit: So, apparently ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ is censored.
♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥?
♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥?
How the hell are the words 'free' and the other word 'skins' offensive together? Wow I want to go on a tangent right now.
