They put it on a card (called Weaponsmith).
If you play with others only one need to own the dlc and you can enter it with the dlc owner.
Good thing about the Trial is, that if you don't want to play any of the 3 maps by luck, you can just leave game and repeat the process until you get a Hive map. Up to 3 Skulls per map. Almost all DLC Campaign maps, except mb Behold The Harbinger would randomly come as well, so you can enjoy them w/out DLC.
And since you still aren't into this mode, better don't add modifiers in the beginning. It's hard to see even a single adequate player in it, better go solo, too many people rly enjoy to increase difficulty to a degree, when game goes unplayable. And u can't lower the difficulty on consequent maps. Better be careful. Horde perks are easier, if going for harder later.
In fact, the card's not a very big deal. You would often run out of cash anyway, especially on coop. A card slot and 400 Cu aren't always worth it.
