Sometimes they don't play sounds for long periods of time, so unless you're Karlee you have no way to know if there's one right around the corner. Meanwhile, other sources of sound such as Birds, Snitches or unalerted Hags can make it difficult if not impossible to hear them. Because of this, you need to constantly assume there's one around every corner, even when there isn't. Not only is that cumbersome and tedious, but it's not always an option when you're under pressure.
On top of that though, their hitboxes once they attack feel pretty inconsistent and at times unfair. They hit through solid terrain especially if the terrain you use for cover is a map prop like a car or if you're in a tight space such as a hive, and they frequently hit even without having line of sight on their target or when obscured by what one would assume is ample cover, such as the prison bars found throughout Act 5. It feels like their hitbox is tiny for the purposes of navigating terrain, but massive when it comes to determining if they hit you or not.
If it weren't for all those bugs, they'd be great. As it is now, there are plenty of scenarios where you get slept even if it isn't your fault and in ways in which you don't have anything to learn from, which I can't say I'm a fan of.
I have noticed that too, but can't figure out how to reproduce them being silent. Sometimes they work, sometimes they don't.
The trick is to be like Luke Skywalker and train without your sense's.
I play with my headphones off because
(a) If you trust the sounds in the game, you will die, because they are only there to give you a false sense of security
(b) Most of the audio in this game is Mouthbreathers and people whining/yelling at you.
So why bother? Just be a Jedi.
Just throw on some tunes and jam out.
You will play better (after you get used to it).
Who wants to listen to groaning and bullet fire, with miss timed horde music and fake sleeper sounds for hours on end anyway? (and mouth breathers)
its a win/win all around.
"communicate" is code word for "Do what I say, or else I call you bad"
The sound boycott applies to both.
The Great Crystal is awful, but getting all the ultimate weapons in the game's original North American release was a hundred times worse. It would take hours or even days of commitment, and there was zero way to do it without a guide. The Great Crystal has nothing on that.
Play without sound. Be a Jedi.
