The direct consequences of this are that you add some more lag, potentially some instability as well, and it's only valid until the publisher pulls the plug. That's not even considering many people play using Wi-Fi on consoles, thus increasing the delay.
I'd rather have functional netplay using the platform's native network architecture than something that's dependent on third-party servers on top of that, and that you have no control on. The best case would be to have huge cross-play lobbies and platform-specific player rooms, or to be able to host a dedicated cross-play server when you create a room, but it's usually either one or the other.
I'd rather have a considerably larger player pool right now than 30 average players on a game that released a week ago. Considering how a lot of people's matches (including mine) are already super delayed and unplayable connection wise, adding in PS4 and Switch players wouldn't make it that much worse, and at the least it'd allow me to play with my friends if they're on a different system.
If niche anime games are to be released on PC or even Switch, then crossplay should become standard practice for all of them as we're all playing the same game, and without crossplay the PC version is just going to be nonsensical to buy for most people.
And it does have something to do with getting cross-play, because as I said most if not all games enabling cross-play have their own dedicated servers and entirely depend on them, without giving any option to use the platform's native netplay architecture. The very way they're built, they're regarded by devs and publishers like "games as a service", and said people tend to shut everything down and remove the game from sale when it's not profitable anymore rather than patching it.
ASW can probably avoid that considering they're already hosting platform-specific Lobbies for BBCF, GGXrd Rev 2 and BBTAG which work separately from Player Rooms, meaning there's a chance for cross-play Lobbies to appear at one point. I wouldn't hold my breath for this one though, especially since there are other issues they have to deal with first and particularly on PC.
But that price tag + low player base (as always on Pc) = Nope.
