Introducing the devs
Hi everyone!

I’m Eric Urban, founder of Lub Blub, programmer and co-creator of Heavy Burger.

Made by two “Bad Dudes” in Los Angeles, Heavy Burger was a team effort between myself and Scott Barrett of International Headquarters. Scott was the Lead Artist, co-designer, and genius behind the amazing arcade-switching mechanic!

A year and a half ago I started prototyping a local-multiplayer tug-of-war top-down shooter. Games like Nidhogg, Enter the Gungeon, and TowerFall were huge inspirations to me. The energy brought to a room with local-multiplayer and co-op is absolutely palpable. I loved it!... And believe it or not, this concept was going to be completely clay-animated!

I’ve been a stop-motion animator for the last decade on projects like ParaNorman and Robot Chicken. Whenever I wasn’t animating, I was coding games, and it’s been my absolute dream to get a stop-motion game out there… well clearly this isn’t stop-motion… BUT...

One day I randomly stopped by Scott’s and showed him my prototype. He had this opportunity to make a game with Data East titles like BurgerTime and Heavy Barrel. We started brainstorming, and even entertained the idea of making Karate Champ out of animated Legos!

Eventually we decided the coolest experience would be an authentic one... Use the original sprites from these games, model the arcade cabinets to exactly match the real ones, and really deep-dive into the nostalgia. Pixel-art all the way. (And some 3D). I was sold.

We worked like crazy for the next 6 weeks to make a Heavy Burger prototype, secured funding, and then poured our hearts into this game for the next year.

Our goal was to focus on a simple, compelling experience... One main game mode that’s completely unique and solid, the perfect party game. It’s been so rewarding seeing our friends go ballistic as they blast each other away. We hope you have as much fun with Heavy Burger as we have!

Thank you for making a game that in concept looks like a ton of fun. While I have not purchased Heavy Burger, I plan to do so soon.

This may be the wrong place to ask this, but does your game have the ability for players to rotate their character in place while firing?

One thing I seem to remember in Heavy Barrel was the fact that you could twist the joystick in place and your player could rotate and fire while remaining stationary.

Do you know of anyone that makes a joystick similar to the one that was made specifically for the arcade version of Heavy Barrel?

Sorry for the late response. I need to get notifications set up for this! Yes you can aim in any direction. It's a twin-stick- shooter so the left stick moves, while the right stick aims. So you can shoot in any direction while running in any direction. And in this game, shooting backwards while running makes you move a lot faster! "Recoil boosting" is a core part of mastering the game.

I don't know of a joystick that works exactly like Heavy Barrel's. It was pretty unique. I've been working on an emulation of Heavy Barrel and unfortunately it's just not the same without the 360 twisty stick.

2-3 years ago already, i seen your last posts and messages on twitter, your website from 2021, are you still working on games? Maybe a sequel to this?
