I craft the stone staircase because when you mine like this you will get TONS of stone. Make about 10 before you start the journey, then just make more as you go down. When you start going down you won't need to strip mine at all because you will hit cave upon cave on the way down. Just try to make the tunnel as stright as possible incase you need to run back up on the fly, you won't jam yourself up with wall torches or wall sticking out. Set down one foundation where you're going to dig because the staircase will need something to connect to. I did it from my work room basement like this giving the stone staircase something to snap to.

When the stone turns darker you will be at gold ore/cobalt level, so make a few extra picks/drills. if you have tons of gold, use drills they break the darker stone faster, if not make a few picks extra. The darker stone means better ore, and also harder mobs so be careful. You'll need copper to mine iron, iron to mine gold, gold to mine tungsten and tungsten to mine cobalt.
