It Was Several Traps glitched

I'm trying to complete the side mission It Was Several Traps to earn Admiral Akbar and a Kyber brick. I've rescued two of the trapped resistance members but the pilot over Crait always comes up as an enemy. Even after I clear out all of the fighters I can lock on to he's the only one left and, even though there are other tie fighters shooting at him, all I can lock on to or shoot at is him. If I destroy him he just respawns and I get trapped in the sphere around him and I can't get out and I can't talk to him.
Is there something I'm missing or is it glitched, because nothing changes no matter which ship I fly.

Don't shoot the pilot. You'll have to go without lock-on and shoot down all the TIEs that appear (it's a lot).

The problem I've got is that if the TIEs get anywhere near him my blaster bolts go to him, even if they're both way off of centerline to my ship.

Well I finally figured it out and now I have another reason to lament the lack of manuals in modern gaming.
Since I had Jango Fett selected as my ground character none of the TIEs counted me as an enemy and so I couldn't lock on to any of them.

Yeah, the character you have selected determines your allegiances. They aren't your "ground character", they are your "character", in this case they are piloting. This can have an impact on several challenges.

I also faced that glitch: I was Boba Fett in his Slave-1 ship and I could only target Resistance fighters, and they were targetting me as well. I spawned my capital ship, landed on it (those who don't have a capital ship unlocked yet can just land on Crait directly), switch character and ship - I took Poe Dameron and his black X-Wing, went back out and it worked, I was now targetting the TIE fighters and was able to complete the mission.

You can switch characters in flight, that was part of how I realized what went wrong.
