Free play no differnt

So I play the first level on free play and achieve literally nothing more than I did in story mode, how in GODS name are you supposed to find anything extra when i walked around the whole damn level for about an hour could not open any doors, blow anything else up or find anything other than what was already bloody there,

I completed the level and literally nothing extra was found, this is plainly a bit ridiculous

Or is it typical TT garbage that in reality it is utterly pointless trying free play until you have finished the whole sodding game as there will ALWAYS be one thing left that makes all the free play stuff possible?

In free play it lets you switch to diffrent characters. You are supposed use their powers to solve puzzles to new rooms. You probably
A:aren't switching
Or
B: don’t have the right characters
Or
C: You aren’t solving the puzzles or actually doing anything other than walking around.

I don't even bother with Free Play in these games until I have all the character types unlocked which usually means playing through the story all the way through. Sounds like you don't have the right characters.

You've only finished 4 chapters; go unlock more characters, as others have said.

Yeah it might be character class problems. You definitely don't have to complete the whole story to do free play and personally I wouldn't recommend it. I enjoy taking breaks from the story when stuff in the galaxy unlocks.

Having at least one reliable character in a class really opens up the galaxy and level free play. You probably need someone to grapple (hero or bounty hunter), a villain for grenades and interfaces, a bounty hunter for the gold objects, an astromech and protocol droids for interfaces (BB units are nice to get around splitting protocol droids all the time to get through the small doors), and a scavenger for all 3 of their abilities. I wanted to complete certain levels/episodes 100% early in my play-through so I went to Episode 7 to unlock Rey for the scavenger class and could do a lot more in free play. Jet packs are always nice so Boba Fett early is great (and he has one of the best blasters in the game). Scoundrels are pretty unused in most of the game in my opinion and get unlocked through the story anyways.

The menu for character selection has 11 slots in it normally, for free play it usually gives you 2 random characters in the first slots and the other 9 after the "|" should be set up with one character from each class so you always have your preferred character for whatever puzzle you are working on.

I'm almost done with the game so I'm not sure which characters are unlocked for you but I HOPE THIS HELPS AND YOU CAN PROGRESS MORE!
