This Game Was Supposed To Have Good Textures?
Um, they some of the worst textures I've seen in a recent fps game. I kinda laughed... I don't get why everyone praises id Tech for the tech abilities.

Well imma play this on max settings, easily over 60 fps, and my computer sounds like its idle. I'm sad. Is there an Megatexture or HD patch somewhere?

megatextures does not mean a ridiculous sixe textures. megatexture is a technique that looks toward save memory bandwidth. basically is a group of "huge textures"(or pages) that contain materials to make a texture. data is streamed from this pages or megatexture, and it's adjusted to the scene. also makes artist's work easier because that pages can contain multiple references about terran type, interacions, sounds, etc.

this game's textures were designed to be run in a xbox. pc actually can manage way bigger textures. thats the why of some "pretty average" textures. if you look with attention the wasteland terrain you will clearly see megatextures work, specially on ground and canyon rocks. there is no other game with this variety and of terrain detail. every rock is rendered, and isn't shaded from a huge plain rock like many other games(crysis included). this technique allows to leave sufficient calculus power to make good shadows, ambiental occlusion, animations and eyes efects at low cost.

Okay, that doesn't deter from the fact that it looks like ♥♥♥♥. If pc can handle way bigger textures, then why doesn't it? idTech said that they wish they could only develop for PC and they act like they're the bleeding edge of technology, when their pc version of their flagship game looks terrible.

I think everyone would rather have a small variation of textures, but have really sexy ones, instead of haivng a lot and all of them looking bad.

I think everyone holds idTech on such high regard because of their past accomplishments, instead of what they're doing now.

IIRC when they were developing this game they had their sights set on pushing the 360's hardware to the limit. I think it was even being touted as the best looking console game before release. This game isn't Doom 3. They didn't promote it as being a true PC game at all. Here's an article where id talks about it being the best looking console game: http://www.psxextreme.com/ps3-news/9390.html

don't forget frame rates and actual resolutions. rage on consoles works at 720 lines, at over 30 fps, unlike most games that use dynamic resolutions or pixel doubling. textures are efficiently streamed from disc, so detail loads faster than other games.
sadly, they never released higher quality textures for pc, this game bright on console, in pc is only an average game. don't misunderstand me, i really want to see higher resolution textures in this game, but these are the facts... would be nice a high resolution texture pack from community, like those enhancements to minecraft, skyrim, or AOE. this game has a lot of potential, but its inusual way to make things is holding back people make things.

I tried the demo on PS3 for Rage and the game was running at 720p and solid 60FPS with slightly low resolutoon textures than PC.

I got it for PC and it looks better at 1080p of course but it has some texture "pop in" with a GTX560Ti OC.

I love the art style and even without having Ultra HQ resolution textures the game looks very good overall. If you watch the entire detail it is hard to find places where texture repeat itself. (I found some areas still but the rest looks all different)
The worst of this game is that it doesn´t have dynamic lighting at all and the ending.

Let´s see if they use this for Wolfenstein: The New Order, it looks like it uses higher resolution textures.

try 64-bit version, and turn on gpu transcode, loads detail faster, but has some cache bugs.

also deactivate texture filtering from nvidia control panel(and another conflicting settings), which is enabled by default. my pc works "acceptable" i play it at 720*480 with an 8600gt and get over 30fps most of time.

I've played it on 360 and it looks terrible.

A lot of textures look awful close up. It's a bit annoying that you can see all the filters activate as your view changes. But I have to say that I really like how smooth the game runs. Being a shooter, at least half the time, it's important to me that I can slide my mouse around like butter. I am using a 6870 by the way.

rage realy needed higher quality textures on the indoor areas like dead city and inside the buildings in wellsprings. The wasteland could have been at the same quality it is now, you dont go walking up to canyon walls but you are kind of forced to see the uglyness in closed spaces.

The great thing about rage is there is no repeating textures. Well... there are some, but its not like skyrim where every rock and every tree every stone and every wooden board looks the same.

the game is what it is, it looks amazing at a distance, and not so much close up.. btw, why are you staring at the ground, who gives a ♥♥♥♥ about the ground, just shoot some mutants.

Neer go full ♥♥♥♥♥♥. You can easily be standing behind cover or turning a corner in a small buliding. It's not that hard to notice low res textures normally, unless you're some idiot that just mindlessly goes from mission to mission without looking at the environment around you.

I think the games looks almost as good as Crysis but runs much faster. id software always writes tight code. With my i5 2500K at 4.635GHz and 2 GTX 460 1GB at 827/1654/4100 SLI the game is smooth as butter at max everything. You really need an nVidia GPU for OpenGL games.

The game is gorgeous ... at a distance. You can tweak the game to use really High defenition textures but there seems to be some issues with how close you are to the actual textures, looks blurry or scaled out over an object.

There might be some tweaks that fixes this, haven't played this game since it launched.
Xoolu Aug 24, 2013 @ 8:29am
A lot of games look gorgeous at a distance, but only the actually impressive ones look good close up. You do end up looking at textures close naturally while playing a game.
