Rage causing computer to shutdown
I'm getting the weirdest problem trying to play this game. I'll play for about 10 mins then my computer will randomly power down as if I shut the computer down. No other game does this, only Rage. -_-

the funny thing is this is the same computer I was using when I first bought the game and now I can't play for more then 10 mins without it randomly deciding to shut my computer down.

you sure your not dusty over time and heat has become an issue? ceretain games can increase your temps more than others. my card runs at 70c with rage other games 58-60 just a guess.. i reinstalled to get the DLC and its running better than i ever remember it before. Heat will shut down your system to avoid dmg. any errors? or just shuts off and stays off?

Now you know why game is called RAGE :P you pc rages when you make it play this game ;p

On a serious note - RAGE is a demanding game, maybe you OCed the pc too much your pc, or maybe your PSU is not enough?

I always keep my computer clean and dust free. I even reinstalled the game fresh. It shuts it down and stays off.

I never OC my machines ever cause I know they shorten the life span of the equipment. Also I had played thru the game with this same machine from the start to the end and never ran into a problem. This is the first time I've ever run into such a serious issue.

Dude.. i have no idea.. i've never even seen this complaint regarding this game.. thats totally from planet X. have you checked in your control panel managment under event logs area to see if it recorded anything? worth a shot
I've seen games shut down without warning but never shut down a computer.. are we talking windows logs off or it just goes off

Software won't force your hardware to shut down (except for windows if you tell it to). What are you cpu and gpu temps? Are all of your fans on? Do you need to reapply thermal paste? I've been gaming with computers for 22 years now and never had that problem due to software. Come back with temps and maybe someone can help you.

Definitely a temp issue. You can also check the error logs to see what caused it after the reboot. I would turn everything for visuals down to the lowest and see if it repeats. My guess is GPU overheating. This game has some pretty heavy GPU graphics. What is your vidcard, PSU and CPU? Do you have any extra fans on your case?

Radeon HD 5870, 750w PSU, AMD Phenom II X6 1100T 3.3ghz

with a 5870 I would definitely turn down the visual quality of the game. if anything start with the anti aliasing. I have a 6870 and it had issues at certain points so one generation earlier is going to struggle even more. Just try turning things down a bit and see if it crashes until you hit something that doesn't crash. And one of my systems was with an X4-965 processor which is virtually the same as your 1100t. And you have downloaded the latest drivers haven't you from steam? That is one thing I do constantly as they are from ATI and not something steam created.

so should I turn down the texture cache also to small rather then large?
Juzt_Lernin Dec 23, 2012 @ 7:34am
That one I am not sure, try it without doing it first. Like I say, just experiment. The game has some great visuals so you don't want to lose everything.
Aux Dec 23, 2012 @ 9:40am
so I turned everything off and low. Haven't run into the power down.
Aux Dec 23, 2012 @ 10:00am
I even put the texture cache to small and it's fine.

I play on a wide screen 32" lcd tv my aging GTX275 im maxed @1366, core i7 920, 6 Gigs DDR3 tri channel and every setting on high it runs without the slightest lag even when all hell breaks loose. but when i enter a new area for a few moments its not playable.. takes 15-30 seconds to lvl out then its off to the races again. this game i have a preset for this on precision to 90% fan and it maxed out sits around 65-68c. If that box under the tree is what im hoping it is ill be installing a 580 Tuesday :) if not this old card still does quite well.
