racing required to progress in story...
just bought Rage as featured item. imo its a solid post-apocalyptic shooter. now i am at the point where you need to upgrade your vehicle to progress in the story and you need to win races for that.
i love shooters, i HATE racing games. and its not only that. this game is even totally unforgiving about the racing part. you have one (ONE!) little flaw in your race and you wont be able to win.

anyone else annoyed about that as well?

some of the races are indeed required to complete in order to progress with the story, but the rest of the races are optional

ye, figured a workaround of the races. found out the time-requirements you have to meet are influenced by the difficulty. appearently i am a good enough shot for ultra nightmare, but not good enough of a driver.
switched to easy just for the race to get the ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ guns and even barely made it. just hope that pimping your buggy wont be too important later on, because i gonna puke if i have to do more races.

One of the reasons I bought this game was for the racing. I don't do racing games, well, not so far. Quite a few other games require you to drive/pilot vehicles at some point, and I've always struggled if they're WASD controlled driving! So this is really helping to improve that aspect of my game skills. To address your point directly, I was gutted when I realised that you HAVE to race to progress! You should have seen my early attempts, LOL disasterous! :) I stuck at it though, and now I've done all the races and won most of them. Couple of tips, you can earn race certs from Sally in the bar, so that when you go out of town, kill all the cars that attack you, go back and see her, get certs. With certs you can buy car/buggy mods from rusty. If you buy the sports tyres you can turn tighter in races. If you buy a bigger engine and or boost, you can go faster. I'm sure you can work out what will suit you best. The other tip, if you save before speaking to Slim, then whatever happens in the race, you can start afresh if you want. I did nearly all my racing just on the 'retry' option provided, but some races I missed out on the max rewards. Hope this is helpful for you. Don't be put off by the raceing aspect, I actually enjoy that side of it now, and of course, they're actually training you for driving in the hostile wastelands! :) Word of warning on the speed front. I've got the biggest engine in my Cuprino, which is fast, but sometimes when I add boost too, my PC can't handle the scenery rendering and it freezes! I won't give the specs here, but they're good enough for high settings in all modern games I've played. :)

thx for your tips Axel. =)
well, i guess we are kinda alike. i totally suck at ANY racing game. tho i am not able to appreciate "practise" at racing. simply just dont enjoy it. i will just put the difficulty to easy while doing races.

@Axelrand

You don't miss out on rewards. You can earn a total of 15 in any one race whether you are 1st or not, so if you get 3rd three times, you will have earned all possible rewards from that race.

In other words, there is no point in save scumming.
