Texture popping question
Did they ever fix the horrific texture popping? I never really played this game because turning 360 and seeing all the textures constantly pop made it unplayable.

I remember installing it a couple of years ago or something to test but it still popped.

So what's up with that? Any fix?

The last time I played the game the texture popping was happening for me only in the highest quality setting with noise/detail textures added. That was when I still had GTX285 (I haven't played the game since 2013). On the quality setting without the noise/detail textures there was no texture popping. The only noticeable visual difference between those settings is when you stand next to a wall looking at it (which isn't what you usually do in the game).

So if you have texture popping, simply switch off these not really useful detail noise textures, or alternatively use either of the guides available in the "Guides" section here, that tell how fix or improve graphics, which increase amount of memory for the textures buffers (I couldn't really use it on GTX285, as it had 1 GB VRAM). Other than this, the game hasn't been updated at least since February 2013.

If you have a 2GB + GPU, then you can use these commands in steam launch options:

+vt_pageimagesizevmtr 16384 +vt_pageImageSizeUnique 16384 +vt_pageImageSizeUniqueDiffuseOnly 16384 +vt_pageImageSizeUniqueDiffuseOnly2 16384

Make sure you're not using "texture detail" in the game options.

Also, this may work best with 3GB + GPU (the last time I tested this was on a 3GB GTX 780 and it works perfectly). Actually, I have played it on a 2GB 750ti, and it also works perfectly, just make sure you're not using ALL 2GB VRAM (you may have to leave AA off on 2GB)

No popping at all, apart from maybe the first few seconds as you spawn in, or when you switch to a weapon you haven't used for a long time etc.

Oh nice one I might give that a try. I have two 4gb 970's so that should be enough. The game seemed quite interesting back in the day but that popping made it unplayable which is a shame.

If you want you can also take a look at my mod, which allows an easy configuration of the CVars and to change the FPS cap, which further helps with the pop-in issue. I've also included a short guide on how to configure the game to balance performance, texture quality and the pop-in problem.

I loved this game on Xbox 360 despite that pop-in; it looked fantastic and still ran at 30 FPS. It's one of those games that made me stop and just look even back then. Still, texture pop-in is a key "feature" of id Tech 5, and PC (especially AMD) has it the worst with no support for CUDA Transcode (even though Stream is basically the same thing).

Have your hand on the refund button, that's the only solution I can give you unfortunately. It's not too bad on Nvidia cards but when I tried it on my old AMD system with an R9 280 it was downright disgusting and unplayable. I'm thinking of trying it again with my R7 360 and FX 8320, but if it doesn't work again... I wonder if Valve will start to get suspicious with the fact that I've refunded this twice.

Is it really that hard to release a demo? That's what's bothered me for a long time. The Xbox version had a demo available, while this just leaves it up to blind luck and a single chance to refund.
