RAGE

Am I playing wrong?
I'm not unfamiliar with FPS's but this game the guns just feel like garbage. The aiming seems off and the power behind each shot reminds me of a slingshot not a gun.

I don't have many hours, so I may be missing something but so far playing this game just isn't fun. How can I unload a full clip into the head of something and nothing happens? Generally I enjoy Bethesda games but this one is just trying my patience.

Please. Help me understand this game.

Update: Are skulls made of adamantium in the future?

Depends on the difficulty. The AK also sucks really bad with the steel ammo and the pistol is almost useless even with the fat boys due to it's low fire rate, wide spread and weird recoil. You can get some upgrades for the AK but you're better off waiting to get the next rifle and sticking to the shotgun. Headshots also really make a difference in this game. Some enemies can take three shots to the head with the AK and steel ammo but the AK is really about unloading on someone semi close range, it's HORRIBLE at any kind of medium or long range because it has terrible recoil and spread, it's kind of controllable but still not that great.

Ah, I'm stuck at the first cave part. Well, stuck might be the wrong word... f'n tired of this peashooter they call a pistol would be more accurate. I'll have to give it another try one day but for now I'll just continue to... rage?

Did you have the option to go into the store at the first town yet? They purposely give you a pea shooter in the beginning, they want you to get used to the combat by making you basically kind of useless, you'll need to go crazy with the melee when youc an safely do so and pick off hard to reach enemies with the pistol. After that you can become kind of overpowered but you need to know what you're doing, spend your money wisely and get some decent armor/weapon upgrades. Also, don't worry about buying the half binocular from the store, it's pretty much useless and makes using the pistol even harder.

Id made Doom (the old one as well as the new one) and if you played it you'll know that in early FPS games headshots meant very little. For better or worse it seems Id has kept this trend going in the game RAGE. I think they do slightly more damage, but for many enemies there isn't even a seperate animation when they die of a headshot, which makes me think it's not a major focus for the developers.

Again, a classic aspect of Doom was that long range shooting like the pistol or assault rifle(s) didn't do much damage. Conversely the shotgun has always been the go to weapon in the series, and it remains very strong in RAGE. Getting up close and personal and shooting an enemy with the shotgun usually does massive damage. The assault rifle, and other assault rifle you get later are very weak unless you use modified ammunition. I typically use them from long range if I want to kill an enemy but don't mind wasting like 3 clips of ammo to do so.

This is not a Bethesda game, it's an Id game (Bethesda are just the publishers). It seems to me like the old tropes of Id games are very prevalent in Rage, so you have to take that into account when buying and playing. To a lesser extent these tropes are still very noticeable in the new DOOM (2016) game.

While I agree with the aspect about older Doom games, there's definitely a big increase in headshot damage in RAGE. But I think the bigger issue is the hit box for the head is a little wacky. The very tip-top and forehead are the best spots to hit and I believe you're correct about range, it seems most weapons do worst damage at range, the only weapons not affected are the crossbow, rocket launcher (For obvious reasons) and the sniper rifle though this makes the handgun virtually completely useless because of it's weak fire rate and damage. The MG actually does some decent damage, it's definitely an upgrade over the AK and I never had problems gettign kills with it from range. The shotgun can also single shot enemies from some distance which leads me to believe that's probably due to multiple bullets hitting the sweet spot on their head. You can also test it too; about two or three handgun bullets will kill a standard bandit with headshots, it takes five or more body shots to take a standard bandit down. Also, I don't think neck shots count as headshots like most FPS games. It's like from the nose and up is considered a headshot or so it seems.

I put a lot of hours into this game on Xbox as well and never found it too difficult or unfair.

And to the OP, you'll probably notice later on that weapons don't always seem to fire right where you aim, such as the shotgun, it fires a little off center to the right and your best bet is to aim for the chest of any enemy to do the most damage, you'll probably get a headshot or two with a single shot due to the way buckshot works and that does significant damage and it's almost always a one shot kill when close range if it manages a headshot or two.

The gun works real good with the half scope. You get the scope at the first store.

The original Doom has absolutely no locational damage. Damage was semi-random based on a table. A bullet did 5, 10, or 15 points of damage depending on the random value returned from the table. That holds true whether it's a bullet trace from the pistol, a shotgun pellet, or from the chaingun. The only "constant" damage in Doom from player weapons was the splash damage from a rocket - it was a constant ramp based on distance from explosion. Impact damage from the rocket was semi-random.

The starting pistol IS weak in Rage. Weapons will get more powerful as you go. Wingsticks really help at the beginning, and if you have Fists of Rage from the Anarchy Edition you can punch enemies for pretty good effect.* I don't know about normal fists. If you want serious damage you'll love the shotgun loaded with pop-rockets. You won't be able to loot the bodies, but a direct hit is a guaranteed gibbing on most human enemies.

*With Fists of Rage you can one-shot mutants with a punch to the face. Do this on Mutant Bash TV and only use the shotgun on the caged mutants and you can get 100% accuracy since a missed punch doesn't count against you.

Did you upgrade your weapons? Are you using the best ammo for your weapons?

WingSticks are pretty accurate and Lethal & They're available at the beginning of the game. Talk to the girl that's tossing one up in the air (standing to the left of Haleks Shop) In the Hagar Settlement)).
They'll Definately keep you alive until you can get something of your liking. Personally, I use Wingsticks throughout the wholegame.

Also get the Scope at the first Store. Right click to Zoom in

Use "Crouch" (C) often!! Sneak up on those Mutant Bastards!
