Maps are really hard for these guys. You can decide for yourself if it is a lack of dev talent, difficulty of the task, or some mix of the 2. But they've been objectively abysmal with them the entire lifespan of this game no matter how often players bring it up.
To give a bit more accurate (as we can possibly give it) account of the full story around the city map that was in the works, their strike team tested it and the gameplay straight up wasn't fun, at all.
Meanwhile it isn't even remotely difficult to see why that would be cumbersome and just pure torture in-game, as we do have maps with large, centralized concentrations of buildings, which majority of players always avoid like the plague, since they are agonisingly dull to fight in. Especially if those maps are to be made with the idea that all decks should have roughly equal odds in fighting in them, Axis fanboys would be even more up in arms in response to Allies having a blast in CQC vs PzGrens and Panthers.
We'll probably see them make more urban focused maps whenever we get to Steel Division 3 with the quality feature additions from WARNO, such as buildings no longer blocking LoS, which would improve city combat by an absolutely massive margin.
Pardon me, Comrade Stalin, were the capitalistic comma and period purged for the crimes against the Soviet people? :D
Would love a Stalingrad map. Then again, Ahri's SD3 idea sounds wonderful too. :)
If it only was so simple as placing down a few assets and calling it day.
All about resource management. It took them ages to release the two latest maps for the game, those being Valley of Death and Dukla Pass, of which we know that Dukla Pass alone has been in some development at least for a year, as the announcement for the DLC was made back in September 2023.
A bit of a waste of development time if only like 5 people will play the map, as they can get a lot of data already about player preferences based entirely on which maps people play the most on, combine that with strike team feedback, and it is rather easy to figure out if a map actually has much worth to invest time into.
Would have I like an urban map? 100%. Any new map is great for me.
Would I rather have them give us the new units across several dozen Divisions, in addition to working on the DLC in return of not getting that one map? 110%.
Or a third option, not considered profitable enough to prioritize so more samey division slop for the hogs.
If that is what you want, you already got that. Harshaje and Kostritsa are just that. Central town area surrounded by fields/hills. But yes, it takes them a long, long time to make maps for SD2, as there is no editor for the game, it is all coded in, which takes a long time.
I mean, that's just a given thing on quite literally everything involving development time, so that's why it isn't a separate option, it all falls under the two already noted.
It's all about resource allocation. You can either spend a year making a new map which you give out for free to avoid splitting the community, or you make a set of Divisions that people can buy which ensures the continuation of your business.
At the end of the day, Eugen needs money to exist, that is how business works. They aren't a charity, nor are they supplemented by the government. If they aren't making profitable decisions, then they go under, it isn't rocket science.
