Why do my battalions get disorganized without an attack?
And they remain that way.

Are they out of supply?

It can also happen if the are next to a unit that looses a battle even when they are not themselves involved in the battle, when they are pushed aside by the enemy units they ger disorganized.

You need to supply the battalions? It doesn't happen in the combat map. It happens in the campaign map and it remains there no matter the turns you pass.

are they behind the enemy frontline or not?

also the fix to disorganization is to let them sit in friendly territory for maybe 1 round.
if anything touches it before that it's dead

That's where it happens. If a unit is behind the enemy front line, it has three turns before it becomes disorganised. There are symbols on the unit which show that status.

Your options then are to move it back into supply, or to fight through to it from outside the encirclement to establish supply to it.
