I bought it on https://indiegamestand.com/store/1317/keen-dreams/
and it only says I can download the Linux version :(
http://indiegame.itch.io/keen-dreams
When I went to pay with paypal it said:
xcvzcxvxzcvxzcv@zxcvxzcvxzcv.com $4.99 USD
This recipient is not yet registered. PayPal will send an email to the recipient explaining how to complete your transaction.
When I paid it let me download the following files:
kdreams-200-win32.zip
kdreams_200_win32.zip
game.exe
kdreams-200-win32.zip has one file inside - kdreams-200-win32 - yes it has no file extension. To get it to work I renamed the extracted file to kdreams-200-win32.zip.
Those files are by far the worst organized ones I've ever seen in a game that wasn't free.
BTW game.zip is a self-extracting archive using WinRAR (it has the WinRAR icon).
It contains DOSBox.exe and some batch files. Inside the keen folder it contains autoexec.bat which contains this:
echo off
cls
cd>curdir.dat
mastmenu
erase curdir.dat
yes it contains "cd>curdir.dat"
When I run DOSBox.exe it says:
mount c: c:\Users\nrglapuser\Downloads\keen
Directory c: c:\Users\nrglapuser\Downloads\keen doesn't exist.
then it has more errors (Illegal command: kdreams)
More contents:
DOSBox 0.74 Options.bat
DOSBox.exe -editconf notepad.exe -editconf %SystemRoot%\system32\notepad.exe -editconf %WINDIR%\notepad.exe
Screenshots & Recordings.bat
DOSBox.exe -opencaptures explorer.exe
Reset Options.bat
DOSBox.exe -resetconf
The \keen\ folder is only about 300 kb and kdreams.exe doesn't work.
Most of the filesize for game.exe is DOSBox which is 3.6 Mb.
In another archive there is a file called KDreams.exe which has no icon but when you load it the spaceship mouse cursor appears and then nothing else seems to happen.
From readme.txt:
=======================
Keen Dreams v2.00beta1 Read Me
This is an in-development build of Keen Dreams for x86 MS Windows.
Run KDreams.exe to play Keen Dreams.
Run ./kdreams-dos to play the original MS-DOS version of Keen Dreams.
Note that at this point, dosbox builds are only included for Linux.
Saved games and settings for the Linux version of the game are stored in
$XDG_DATA_HOME/Commander Keen/Keen Dreams.
The updated version of the game requires OpenGL 2.0, and benefits greatly
from the EXT_framebuffer_object and EXT_framebuffer_blit extensions.
Known Issues
------------
- Memory debug cheat (F10+M) displays invalid data and draws incorrectly.
- Graphics settings are not saved.
- [Original] Fix bad tileinfo on "Exit" signs?
- [Win32] Graphics are misaligned with some Intel drivers.
I think it is poor quality work.

Also does this guy have any proof that he owns the rights to it?
Googling some of the people involved with the indiegogo campaign turns up some shady-looking pasts.

some excerpts:
"Dude, Javier M. Chavez is a scammer, he illegally released Strife to iOS and Mac, also released multiple open source games without publishing sources. "
"..... It's true that I was selling software without owning the rights to it, and im sorry about that, I have removed those from sale. This campaign was my venturing into legit realms. I was tired of selling illegal software, and i really didnt see much gains from any anyways....."
Cheers, and thanks for the info, excreationist.
"Just because he's guilty of selling illegal software in the past doesn't mean he's guilty of it now."
He was breaking the law and there should be consequences even if it was in the past. I can't believe people are so tolerant of his fraud.
But anyway he is still not being honest.
e.g.
Here and elsewhere he says he is from Peru....
https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/let-s-get-keen-dreams-re-released-legally
Here he is from "stuttgart, Germany"
https://www.indiegogo.com/individuals/7607290
He should use his real name but I guess he doesn't want his bad reputation to catch up with him.
On Steam as far as I know he hasn't mentioned Indiegogo and how $1277 of the $1500 was paid by other people. So he paid less than 15% yet he acts like it is completely owned by him (well I guess technically it is).

That doesn't make sense because Lunick said he paid $20 and...

if you donate at least $3 - "a free copy of the game when it's released!"
It says if you donate at least $20 "You'll get your name in the game credits too!"
Well their names aren't in the readmes

In the win32 version the in-game help section has been updated with info about the win32 changes. There don't seem to be any credits.
I agree that someone who has been proven guilty of a crime should be punished accordingly. However, I do not believe that makes that person automatically untrustworthy for the rest of his or her life (although, certainly one should exercise caution when dealing with that person); that's all I'm saying. As for the rest of your post, that really is unfortunate. I'm a sucker for that era of gaming, and this kind of thing tarnishes the title. Not only that, but the good people at Groupees are now part of this debacle (due to the game's inclusion in a recent bundle), and they don't deserve to be.
Thanks for all of your hardcore detective work!
I have been in a very long conversation with him on steam and he wants me to delete my posts even though I said he could simply defend himself. He also said "if you have a complain against me, or the game, file a request to Valve"
