Commander Keen won't play on Mac?
I bought this today hoping to be able to re-live some nostalgia only to find that it doesn't work. Is there anyway to play this on my mac? I'm running 10.6.8 OS X

The only reason it runs on Windows currently is because it (like most/all DOS games on Steam) is using the DOS computer emulator "DOSBox", and I'm fairly certain there's a Mac version of the software. TC - go here: http://www.dosbox.com/download.php?main=1 and click on the "Mac OS X" link to download a mac compatible version of the program, set it up, then copy the Keen data files into whatever folder you'd like, mount that folder as the "C" drive in the program, and you should be able to run the games.

They only provide the Windows version of DOSBox, but it's easy enough to run the Mac OS X version of DOSBox and run the EXEs/data files that are contained in the games folders/copy them out to a new folder. It would have been relatively trivial for Id to include the Mac OS X version of DOSBox and an appropriate launcher for the OS.

I understand this is an old topic, but others possibly ending up in here, you should try out the Boxer app. It hasn't been updated in a while, but hopefully still runs:

If not, then try following this:

I realize this is a super old thread...
Can anyone help me?
I'm trying to get CK to even install on my Macbook Pro (10.13.6). I just got a DOSbox wrapper from a forum on another site (NeoGAF) & *tried* to follow the instructions, which involve dragging the CK files to the wrapper. BUT- Steam won't let me install the CK games, so there ARE no files I can drag over...
Then I found + got Boxer, but it looks like I'm facing a similar problem?

PS- I am NOT familiar with this process at all (ovbs) so 'steps for dummies' would be rad ;)

It appears you need Windows to download them, but with a quick googling I found that:

"Download Wineskin Winery (http://wineskin.urgesoftware.com/tiki-index.php?page=Downloads), and create a blank wrapper. Then download the PC version of Steam, and install an instance of Steam within the wrapper. Install your games from there, and copy the files ..." for the boxer.

( source about 4-5 years old): https://www.reddit.com/r/macgaming/comments/2idpsc/how_to_force_download_pc_games_on_mac_steam/)

I don't have mac so unfortunately I can't further elaborate or help, but seems there's some way to cheat it.

So will this game run on any windows computer? I also have a Macbook Air and I even tried to download Crossover and get it to work but to no avail. I might just have to get a Windows running PC. I was going to anyways.

On windows it runs without issues, as it's just using the included DosBox installation and running from there and Dosbox supports most Windows versions from I believe 7 upwards. "DosBox Staging" seems to require 8+. That shouldn't be a problem unless you're very old school, but in that case you could even run it natively maybe. 😅
