I'm nodding like Jay right now.
I don't blame people for enjoying the campaign, but this was poorly written.
Well, it wasn't so much as poorly written, as much as it was not written at all. I mean, I can kind of see that the main hero is possessed but it does not go beyond that.
I understand the protagonist picked up that sword and went into a rage that he could not remember, so it makes sense that it has some part of the story in that detail rather than him being hacked, unless he was both hacked and possessed by demons.
There are also several hidden things that could give you clues. The three synicles on mars for example... or that bright shining mandico in new eden.
Even the brain in the temple which I haven't really noticed until you mentioned it makes kinda sense.. or Dutch reappearing as if nothing happened after he died before your eyes (if you don't manage to save him)
You could somewhat compare the story to the dark souls universe in which it isn't told to you very cleary
You have to look for it and figure it out on your own.
It's not about a demon sword though.
I don't know, it's frustrating because it's interesting, but limited.
There is this guy infront of Rimanahs office after one mission who tells you a story of why the synicles look like blindfolded women.
And than there are these three synicles that tell you a story in this factory on mars.
That might give you a little hint. Especially if you played through once and someone asked you what you were always doing in the office of Rimanah
So, I get he killed his wife, and he was dead so far.

This might be the place for you. Yuyuko did a fantastic job explaining it in detail.
edit: you would have to scroll a little up i think
Ah, that makes sense now. The hero has been running around trying to kill himself for like a week now. It's all starting to make more sense now.
guess you'll need to read wiki - it has explanation
The wiki for this game is extremely lacking. TV tropes gave me a better understanding to be honest.
The game does have plenty of of obscure references that turn out to relate to the story in some way or form. The pillars in the dream as well as in cc_end have runes that translate to something that I cant quite recall 2 years after looking it up but think it went something like the beginning is the end.
Not sure how to post something blanked out for spoilers or id go into it in a little more depth.
