Good to know the developers took a moment from developing 80 million DLCs in order to resolve this issue!
Edited to add: I have not installed any DLC, and I only got the game today.
"First the language keeps rotating and eventually turns into squares or question marks"(depending on your supported fonts, its something unreadable anyway)
I managed to fix this by
1. Close the game.
2. Verify the game files trough steam (found no errors in my case)
3. Delete "C:\Users\USERNAME\Documents\Anno 1800\config\engine.ini"
4. Reboot the game and it should be defaulted to fresh boot settings (make sure to change settings again that you had changed before).
P.S
Even though the language was correctly set to english in the ini file, the very fact it was deleted and remade on game launch somehow fixed the issue for me.
Having rebooted the game twice and having played several hours since then no more issue appeared.
A bug like the one you're mentioning was reported a while back and should have been resolved in Game Update 2, as a workaround we generally advise that you close the game and change language manually, then restart the game.
Wolfdale Thank you for providing the details on the workaround you found to fix the changing language issue.
If anyone wants to try this I encourage that you do as it's a step I would have suggested myself.
If the issue does continue for anyone after this, I'd like to ask you to please capture a video of this happening for you and together with a MsInfo [www.ubisoft.com] and DxDiag [www.ubisoft.com] report, attach these to an email [www.ubisoft.com] case, so the team can take a closer look.
Thank you in advance, I apologize for any inconvenience caused!
